Pick 12 discussion.

Ellis doesn't appear to be a contested inside mid. His highlights show him being a sweeping back flanker.

Ellis, Lennon, Vlaustin, B.Ellis. There's a theme. Trying to make one paced flankers into mids.

You're saying that based on a 3 minute highlights package, where all the draft watchers/recruiters/journos call him a pure midfielder.

I don't mind his highlights but think his type is not what we need.
Us novices can only go off what the highlights show but the experts watch hours of footage. Looking at his stats, he has no issue getting contested possessions, if anything he needs to get out on the outside more and get the easy ball.

I said based on his highlights. If he was a contested inside mid you'd think there would be footage of it.

His highlights showed me a kid who moves in a very similar fashion to Heppell.

Whilst I understand people talking up the need for pace we are still reliant upon a few too many when it comes to winning the contested ball. We just lost Jackson who was arguably one of our best.

The loss against Port was purely due to our inability to get first use. The likes of Wines, Ebert, Boak etc smashed us. It wasnt their pace that did the job but their ability to beat us on the inside.

Can't agree with that Smoking. We lost for the following reasons

1. Our defensive setup with extra numbers back was a massive error and wasn't retified quickly enough
2. When they got the ball they ran around us or through us or over us. Pace, skills and will to win were far superior
3. We could have won every centre clearance and we still would have lost given our setup

its amazing how many are bagging our possible because they dont like his highlights. im guessing/hoping our recruiters are going off a bit more.
Yeah but they r called highlights for a reason. They r supposed to show a players best plays, their strengths, their abilities etc. don't see much of this in Ellis highlights. They seem more average-lights to me and many others.
Anyway just watched laverde highlights again and wow he has everything we need. I'm calling him this years bontempelli as of now. Surely we pick him if available!

In other words we were comprehensively beaten all over the ground. ;D

Problem is we will never know because when the game was hot we couldn't get our hands on the ball.

Unlikely. We have a history unde FJ of getting fixated on a player early and not swaying irrespective of who else is available. Not expecting any different this year either

Would many view our draft differently if we ended up with a Ellis/Menadue combo?
I would prefer any of the following or any combination of the following

Laverde/Maynard
Ahern/N-B
Duggan/Miller
Weller/Gore

I have it on VERY good authority that we'll be taking Ellis if available.

Thanks for breaking that news. Good to know nothing leaks from the RFC these days. Strange how the only pick everyone is certain about outside the top 5 and the father sons is pick 12. Geelong at 10, GC at 8, WC at 11 and even GWS at 6 & 7 everyone is still guessing

oh well. was hoping for Lavern & Shirley but not to be.

Welcome Ellis, hope you have a successful career with us

it could be smoke and mirrors, but I doubt it. Just as long as we manage to get a bit of speed with the rest of our picks, really hope a few people drop.

I don't really want us to pick drummond with our second pick like some are advocating, Ive seen him play and he really butcher's the footy. At least Ellis, whilst not fast, is supposed to use the ball pretty well. :-\
