Pick 12 discussion.

Just a thought on Ellis - I suspect we could have been well looking at him seriously when we were looking to trade backwards in trade week. Ala Trengove trade & 23 for 12. Maybe Richmond tried to tempt some other clubs with pick 12 to get extra higher picks and go backwards on our first selection.

If so Ellis may well been in the target range so we did the due diligence on him early - Hence the media got a sniff and have been running the stories since trade week that we are interested. Could be the case that he is seen as a replacement for Newman, not sure.

Anyway, the Top 10 looks pretty fluid so I doubt the club has told anyone they are taking him until they know who's available at 12. Maybe in a day or 2.

Well if that's the list of 15 then that is who FJ should also be selecting from, within reason. I really really hate it when we start getting fancy pants.

Interesting that Cocky isnt there.

I might also add Laverde to the above list, EQ has him drifting out of the top ten. Ellis vs Larverde? No contest, Frank knows which side his bread is buttered.

You would think so Bully as 3 or 4 weeks ago Laverde, Lever, Ahern were all going to be gone at 12. Now every chance all three will be there. No doubt FJ's target has now changed.

Bully, who you would take out of Laverde or Cocky? Same types.

I think Cocky has the more accomplished inside game, with his contested possession ratio being around the 60% mark and Laverde's being sub 30% they present as slightly different types. But in saying that, I'm a huge Laverde fan and would have no hesitation in calling out his name. He was a star at the carnival and he has so many tricks up his sleeve. I can see him eventually playing in the midfield and hopefully replicating the feats of Steve Johnson, he's this year's Billings and should be going in the top 5. I'm not sure why Collingwood has gone cold but I suspect it's due to Melbourne getting itchy feet on McCartin, there could be a chain reaction at play here.

If we were to go down the Ellis path as our first rd selection, who would be the speedier types that could possibly be available at our 2nd pick?

you'd have to be pumped to get Laverde. Looks a real good bet. If he fell to #12 and we overlooked him I'd be spewing.

Ideally someone like Menadue, Garlett or McKenzie but I doubt any will be there. Probably looking at someone like Cavka or Viojo-Rainbow. I'm hoping we pick Weller and Miller, Gore or Maynard will be available at 33

First tier = Cockatoo, Laverde, Weller & Ahern (draft range 5-15)
Second tier = Garlett, Menadue, McKenzie, Boekhorst (draft range 15-30)
Third tier = McGrath, Saad, Drummond, (draft range 45-Rookie)

As you can see I'm not confident of getting maximum value at 33, hence I would be locking in pace with 12. We'll get a good shot at an inside mid with 33, Miller being my preferred candidate (realistically speaking).

I agree. They are the same type in as much they will devastate on the outside and that's were they will hurt teams. This draft in particular, has a lot of movement post draft combine and pre draft. For all of the good around Jordan De Goey, I wouldn't take him at 5, that's been floated as a real chance. Wright, Durdin, Laverde all have dropped after the footballing season is over. That's when you should be making 90% of your judgements, not after the combine. I am always suspect on players rising after the combine based on results around cones. The rising and falling shows how even and fickle the draft is after 3. CP, Gus and Paddy will go in some order. After that. No idea.

If I was Melbourne and Paddy Mc goes at 1, I would be delighted with Gus and CP. Put them with Viney & Salem and you have a framework for a good midfield. Put Paddy with Hogan and you have your key forwards. That's a desirable outcome. But once 4,5,6,7 come around it's madness.

if I'm GWS, I take Pickett at 4 and Wright & Durdin at 6,7. I am not sold on the GWS bigs now that Boyd is gone. If it goes that way, the next mystery is Geelong at 10. I think they are hot for Wright. Once he is gone, I think they take Goddard. But it could go a thousand ways. Most exciting draft in years.

X2.

However I cant see him falling that far. He might not be Collingwoods first choice at 5 but the other clubs before our pick will surely snap him up.

Reece McKenzie, Connor Menadue maybe Drummond with a later pick. Gore and McGrath also come to mind.

Still not sure that Paddy goes top 3, Melbourne have shown just as much interest in Lever, he seems to be a better fit given Frawley is gone and they have Hogan. Will have to wait and see.

Seconded.

Still think that Paddy is a much safer bet than Lever. And getting your key forwards for the next decade is golden. Not sure I'd pass on Paddy at 3.

It's the health issues with Paddy that concern me, not sure how the diabetes will effect his performance. I'm no expert in this area but it must be a consideration.

Doesn't concern me in the slightest, it's the modern day asthma. Paddy's is type 1. Nothing to worry about.

I reckon he is a better Jack Darling.

If the Flea could manage his diabetes thirty years ago, I'd be pretty sure any AFL standard player would have no problems managing it now. Player diets, rehab, training requirements are monitored to the nth degree as professional athletes nowadays.

I think a few current players have type 1 diabetes IIRC? Jack Fitzpatrick from the Dees might be one...?

Sam Reid from GWS (Delisted 2013) was another.
