Pick 12 discussion.

Langford not attending the draft after all, scrub him off the list. Hopefully Pies pick De Goey.

If this is true then those at the helm have played the worst hand of poker I can recall. Why on earth would they not accept picks 4 & 7? Melbourne were very tentative in their interest of McCartin, there's every chance he would have been available at 4. Secondly, Peter Wright stands every chance to have a similarly successful career as McCartin. The Saints have lost the plot, no wonder their list is the worst in the AFL.
Sounds like a complete spanner in the works suggestion from the journo. Or as you suggest total stupidity from St Kiddinme.
Considering the apparent flat lining of the talent pool between one and ten, and the range of both KPP / mids available I think the Saints were fools not to accept four n seven for the one pick. Especially considering the Saints were claimed to be looking at a mid with pick one.
Petracca, McCartin, Brayshaw, Wright, within the first four then a whole host of quality mids n a couple of very good KPP to lurk over for pick seven. Saints could easily have filled two major holes for the cost of one pick.

A guy named Sam McClure (not familiar with him... 3AW journo?) reckons McCartin has firmed as the number 1 pick over CP now. This draft is just all over the shop

Jeeebus. This is the worst draft of the last decade to have pick one. But I'm with Bully, no way they knock back 4 & & and take Paddy Mc.

Grace wasn't even invited to the combine, rookie chance at best. He has excellent numbers at TAC level but isn't damaging with his disposal. Looking through the list I'd jump on McGuinness, seems a great prospect and could be a real find at the deep end. If he was playing for SA or Vic Metro he'd be spoken about more highly.

according to that list & what i have read on here etc i'd take Gore instead at 70 but popular opinion has him well gone by then....

I'd be very surprised to see the Doggies overlook him with one of their 5 selections.

Laverde is difficult to place should Collingwood not select him at pick 5 and, if he doesn't land at the Giants, is likely to make it outside the first 10, where West Coast, Adelaide and Fremantle will consider him.

Does this mean Laverde is not on our radar? Or does it mean we rate Weller higher and have confidence he will get to our pick?

Then the debate might be a Laverde vs Weller.

He says this about Ellis:

"Ellis has shot up the draft board this year, so much so that some would even rate him as a top-15 prospect. With his excellent left boot, I think that is justifiable. Ellis is a really creative outside player who can set up play on either foot. He’s really damaging and usually makes the right decisions: however, he can try to be too fancy and his daisy cutters can fall short of the target. At this stage, he looks to almost exclusively be an outside midfielder. If he had a few more strings to his bow, like hitting the scoreboard or winning inside ball as well, I think he could’ve pushed for top 15 selection. However, there is still plenty of room to improve."

Which is very inaccurate IMO, then says this about Weller:

"Weller can really find the ball, but I do wonder what he would be like if he played for a stronger team. He’s really silky on the outside and has a booming kick on him. By hand, he is very clean and his decision making skills are first rate. He can win his own ball on the inside and he is excellent at not only getting the clearance but also placing his kick to a target, rather than just bombing it when he gets it. He’s been plying his trade at the Brisbane Academy, but he doesn’t qualify as an academy player. I’m sold on him now. He has a terrific leap and took a screamer in the final against NSW right in front of my eyes. He has everything going for him. He is a terrific athlete and his skills are sublime. He can kick the most difficult and impressive goals, and his speed is tremendous."

Two things, Ellis' contested game is far more advanced than Weller's; and Weller was playing for the GC Academy, not Brisbane.

No mention of Richmond which indicates Emma doesn't have a clue. I still think we will select Weller or Laverde, depending on who drops out of the top 11. Durdin's late call-up indicates Geelong want a tall, that's good news from a Richmond perspective. Langford is yet to get a call-up, hopefully that occurs over the next 24 hours. I'm still hopeful we'll get what we need.

Laverde or Weller seem like the type of player we need. Happy with either. I've changed my mind on Cocky. Frank won't risk pick 12 on him anyway.

If you had a choice between the two who would you pick?

Our new Draft picks

#12 - #33 - #52 - #67 - #77 - #83
Just saw that. Looks like we are now taking 5 picks in the draft plus the last pick to upgrade Miles.

Looks like we have kept our word and heavily investing in the draft.

Tough choice but I would pick Laverde, slightly more risk but his ceiling is higher. To have him working in tandem with Riewoldt would give us a very potent forward line, then in due course he moves to the midfield. Laverde is capable of anything on the football field, we would just need to get him team orientated and less of a maverick. Seeing how Riewoldt has developed and I have the full confidence in the coaching staff to get the best out of him, he is what I consider to be a critical piece in the premiership puzzle.

Pick 12? - There's 3-4 players we hope to be there. Still seems to be a debate over how the top 10 will actually pan out. GWS & Collingwood picks will play a big role in that. No matter how it turns out, we are still confident a good player will be available at our pick, particularly in terms of midfield depth we are trying to fill.
