South Africa’s National Assembly voted yesterday to suspend diplomatic ties with Israel, as well as the closure of the Israeli embassy within the country, due to Israel’s continued war against Hamas in Palestine.

The vote, initiated by opposition party Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and supported by the ruling African National Congress (ANC), called for a suspension of all diplomatic ties with Israel until a ceasefire is reached. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) also will be putting up a motion to suspend relations with countries that support Israel these countries are US, UK, Australia, France, Norway and Austria.

I bet they still expect those countries to still contribute $millions in aid. Fortunately many countries contribute
I’ve put the monetary contributions in the above post. All for 2023.

I wonder how much aid STH Africa give to UNRWA or the Palestinians.

I looked it up. SA donates $1million pa to UNRWA for Gaza. Maybe they take over the Aid contributions from the countries they want to suspend relations with.

Not sure what aid to UNRWA has to do with it Willo? As we have noted before UNRWA has been going for more than 70 years and is indispensable across the whole Palestinian population not just in Gaza.

What countries do and don’t do diplomatically is up to them but personally I would prefer that we engage diplomatically than withdraw from it. South Africa of course has a massive history of apartheid and they talk a lot about the parallels between what they experienced and what Palestinians experience, especially in the West Bank. As an aside it has now been reported that 350 Palestinians have been killed by the Israeli military and illegal settlers in the West Bank since October 7. The October 7 attack didn’t come from the West Bank.

I note the Americans again voted against a permanent ceasefire yesterday because they have some peace deal negotiations going on. I am not a religious person but I pray to whatever god is out there that they are successful so we can head off the potential carnage of an attack on Rafah.

The US and the West for that matter have no moral credibility regarding human rights as they allow the continued slaughter and starvation of thousands of innocent people in Gaza.

And therein lies the real problem: the West’s unwillingness to bring Israel to order the last 60 years.

I think the US is worse than that, with Australia pretty bad too, due to the high-paying lobby groups/ organisations the Israeli government uses to buy influence and threaten hefty repercussions if what they want isn't followed.

Then there is the whole industrial military complex out to get their filthy hands on more taxpayer money.

They’re all bad K3. Too many conflicts of interest to be truly willing to pressure Israel, and to bring them to account.

Yeah, is a bloody shame hey mate...

Watched an interesting interview with Jeremy Corbin the other day. I would much prefer having him as our PM than good ol' Elbows.

It makes me too angry to discuss any more to be honest.

Just pointing out that while South Africa “wants to suspend relations with any country that supports Israel”.
What type of support are they referring to?
Meanwhile forgetting the 1000’s of$millions those same countries donate in aid to UNRWA and other aid providers.
Well if there are similarities SA should put their money where their mouth is. $1million in aid, pfft .Talk is cheap.

Shocking happenings in the West Bank.
I know October 7 massacre wasn’t launched from the WB.

I think prayers will fall on deaf ears unless hamas surrenders and the hostages are handed over.
It’s now the “end game”. I think Israel will push on through Rafah. They won’t leave the job unfinished ( in their eyes) . They vowed to destroy hamas, and they haven’t done so as yet.

I haven’t the answers to stop it. Will the Gazans give hamas terrorists up? I doubt they could even if they wanted to. Would handing over the hostages stop it? I think Israel have already answered that. Could International opinion sway Israel? They believe their survival is at stake, so I doubt it.

Unfortunately, I’m not holding out much hope for a peaceful solution. I could be wrong,I hope I am

I haven't read that anywhere. And that's not the reason they are doing what they are doing though.

Yeah I am not a great fan on cutting off diplomatic relations as to me all it does is cut off any dialogue.
It is symbolic but we need to remember the history of South Africa and apartheid. When apartheid was at its peak one of the only countries in the world that recognised the legitimacy of the South African apartheid government was Israel. So moving 180 degrees from that is a statement of change I guess.
