Olympics 2012 - London

I love the equestrian but it usually gets very poor coverage. Hope that improves this time.

I feel the same way about road cycling as mk does about the 1500 swimming. I particularly love the swimming sprints, with the techniques and strategies, far more than running races which are over in 10 seconds.

Personally think Swimming is better over rated especially any race of the 100, with the 1500 race as exciting as night out with Grant Hackett when he is only drinking water.
The 1996 1500m final was one of the best things I've seen in sport. Stirring.

but yeah, kind of lacklustre web site isn't it?
Actually, I have this strange feeling this is the lowest key buildup to an Olympics ever

I am in London at the moment and it does feel like the Olympics are happening. Lots of stuff throughout the city and big rings on the tower bridge.

Shame I wont be here next week when it is on.

It was a great moment very stirring and really liked Keiren Perkins, but to me personally the event is quite boring as compared to Athletics in swimming you cannot see the tactics or the facial expression of the swimmer you just a splash of the water. Apart from 1996 the 1500 has being not very exciting. Rosy i like all the running not just the 100m.

The 100m is though the glamour event with 1988 drama of Johnson, the many false starts and then the world record of Bailey and Bolt in 2008 was amazing, hope this years lives up to the hype. Love the tactics of the Africans in lobg distance runs with marathon a personal favoutite.

The drama begins. Heat wave...all of 30. :hihi Poms have air conditioning but no other countries do. Nth Korea women walk off before the start of their footy game due to the Sth Korean flag being used. Traffic standstills. Athletes suspended due to twittergate comments. Appalling targeting of a swimmer's body shape in the Australian media.

Can't wait for the opening ceremony to be out of the way, I won't be watching it, then bring on the games.

Lauren Jackson carrying the flag - meh. Surely we could have someone who has sacrificed everything for their sport, not someone who earns bajillions more from it than they would have in real life.

Real life? What does that mean?

Fantastic choice I reckon.

Agree, the last few flag bearers in Hoy, Gaze, Beachem and Tomkins were the leading olympians in terms of most olympics attended.
Apart from Hoy Stuart O'Grady was at the most olympics being 6 and would have being a fantastic choice and would have accepted the role.
O Grady though was competiting at 1000 the next day and if not carrying the flag would be not be marching.

There was also a push for a female flagbearer to carry the flag as it is thought for females to compete at mulpitle olympics like males have.
Natalie Cook was at her 5th Olympics and would have being a good choice except for her untimely outburst this week.
Liesel Jones was mentioned but I think she has carried the flag recently at a closing ceremony or Commonwealth Games.
Lauren jackson is a great choice 4th Olympics, 3 silver medals would mean she has earned that respect to carry the flag.

Looking forward to it all starting, hopefully the opening ceremony is great as done by Danny Boyle and still should have some good musical acts.

Can anyone advise why neither our men or women are competing in soccer yet our friends from over the ditch (New Zealand) are ? Did they beat us in the Oceania region ? I can't recall the circumstance but strikes me as odd that they are in London and our supposedly rapidly growing world game sides couldn't make it.

Interesting that not many of the Europena powers are competing either - Germany, France, Holland etc. obviously limited spots.

What I mean is that there are a ton of athletes who survive on the smell of an oily rag to continue their sport and represent their country at the Olympics. For the likes of basketballers, soccer and tennis players (and even road cyclists), they are professional sportspeople earning very large incomes and the Olympics isn't even the most prestigous tournament they wil play in for the year. I'd rather one of the former category to do it, not just a basketballer because she has a high profile.

That being said, I heard her on the radio after I posted my earlier criticism and she sounded genuinely honoured and was quite emotional, so my stance on her personally has changed.

Was hoping for Stuart O'Grady to carry the flag, but any of these athletes on the Australian team is good enough to carry it IMO.

We didn't make it and weren't good enough.

If I remember right, the Olyroos went through all the qualifying rounds without scoring a goal (happy to be corrected if wrong) ???

Also though, we aren't in Oceania anymore...we're in Asia.

I vote this lovely lass carries our flag for the 2016 Olympics.

How much money she makes shouldn't come into it though.

It should be the athlete that has served us well at the Olympics, regardless of gender or income.

The flag-bearing duties ended up being a man.v.woman thing caused by Cook and her feminist cronies which was a disgrace in itself.

Its a shame that Jackson may have received the honour regardless of Cook's outburst but now we'll never know if Green picked Jackson on pure logic or whether he was swayed by the feminist brigade.

Cook may have being carrying it herself if it was not for her outburst, she is at her 5th olympics the most by any female
