You might not have but the team has

i like Vlastuin, but i think he has shown he best position is still as a back.
to bring him in we would either have to move or drop one of the other backs.
Obviously cant replace Rance, Astbury or Grimes.
Both Ellis and Houli are probably in career best form.
Short is probably our no.7 back so prob the 1st to go, but he will prob also end up our best small defender and is playing ok, so needs to stay in.
& McIntosh gives us the flexibility to play Grimes small or tall whilst also giving drive.

I would be happy to Vlastuin spend a couple of weeks in the 2s to regain touch.

The good thing is we have options now. The very thing you describe is the sign that we are a better team.

Bring in Vlossy and Conca and two have to go and that's hard because we don't have two obvious candidates.

Lloyd, castagna, Bolton, Lambert, Butler, Short and MCIntosh all could be candidates but all of them also have legitimate claims to stay in the team. I was expecting Grigg and Houli to also be under pressure this year and both are playing good footy, especially Grigg.

Amazing what competition for spots does to a team

Yep. I haven't missed him because he's been adequately replaced.
That's not to say he's not a handy player still but he'll have to force his way back into the team.
Wouldn't have once.

I reckon we've missed Conca more.

Vlastuin has gone backwards this season and had stagnated the previous two.

I think I may be harsher than most on him, but given Nick's rookie year I don't think there's a more disappointing player on the list. Not a midfielder, not a forward and our backline has been the best in the league without him.

The club has lied about injury recovery times for a long time.

Why the surprise?

"Lied" is a bit strong. Estimating recovery time is just that - an estimate. I'm sure we're not alone in getting it wrong some times.

We're not missing him because we're winning. He and The Alfa were revelations this year. We've already forgotten what they bring.

Yeah a revelation that Floss couldn't play mid/forward Baloo.

I like the kid but he plays back or plays for someone else.

Considering Vlastuin has been pushed forward this year I think he has battled hard. I prefer to see him back, I think he is a better backman than Conca (check his last year stats to Conca's this year's, similar stats but Vlastuin far better disposal skills) and the couple of times this year he was moved back after playing forward it was like the shackles had been removed. Hopefully with Conca out Vlastuin will come back in as a backman and Hardwick can end this plan (a pet like of his) to turn someone into something they are not.

This.
Vlastuin looked comfortable when he went back and was playing good footy when he unfortunately got injured but we know he can do that.
Where he becomes limited as a player is that he struggled when asked to step up into more challenging roles.

Had Vlaustin not been injured during the Dogs game, there's a chance that we would not have dropped the Dogs, Freo and Giants games.

Was in very good form in the first quarter against the Dogs before he went down.

Not named in VFL this weekend.
Injured again???
I mentioned on team changes thread and not sure it is the reason but: In the VFL last week he got a knock to his shoulder and despite playing out the game seemed to be carrying it. Hopefully no recurrence.

The "Trade Vlastuin?" thread - Was Game Plan 2017 Rewind Adelaide thread

This was our worst loss of the year - but let's consider team selection and strategy for that game in the context of what's happened since.

This was the first game this year that we played with no second tall forward - no Griffins and Rocket-Man was omitted for this game. Connor M was also dropped (justifiably) for this game and Markov was playing. I remember there was a lot of excitement on here - we could all see the possibilities of a super-quick, short and fast forward line. And it worked for a quarter. This was the first time Dimma-LeppaCella really doubled down on quickness.

It wasn't 100% of course - into that team came Vlastuin (still being trialled up forward) and Steve Morris - but to be fair we hadn't elevated Shai and Stengle into the senior team yet, and we were relying on the defensive forward play of Morris, which was a fair call at the time, some might disagree. But IMO the strategy was right, the personnel still needed tweaking. We also had Conca still in the side pre-injury and playing well. And we were already playing a longer kicking, more play-on, more forward defensive manic pressure game.

Now we all know that game ended badly for us - and we did go back to playing Elton for a few weeks. But I reckon we have to give Dimma and crew some great credit for recognising that this game plan and team selection would work fantastically well given some time to gel - and it took four more weeks of agonisingly close losses, but they stuck with it. They could see the potential. Kudos.

Compared to the current side as selected it's quite similar. Out are Vlas, Conca, Morris, Houli - in are Shai, Stengle, LLoyd and Menadue. I reckon our stability at selection overall combined with quickness elevated on merit, and players demoted on merit has worked fantastically well this year.

Assuming Vlastuin becomes available soon, I reckon the guy who gives way is probably Markov. I reckon we double down again and keep playing small and fast. Teams aren't coping with it.

Re: Game plan analysis 2017 - rewind, Round 6 Adelaide

It is working at the minute, but it has been argued lacking a good second tall may have been costly in the Swans loss. As you say maybe we are still adjusting to it.
I am however still in the prefer a second tall camp.
My ideal scenario is a fit Griffiths to rotate with Nank and rotate on and off the ground with a small to mix up match-ups..

Don't forget the 2nd ruck concern in all this.

Yeah, that's fair Mervs. Although not having a second ruck didn't really hurt us that much against Port despite Ryder killing us in the HO. Against the Swans we just didn't seem to get numbers at the fall of the ball as much as we seem to do most games now, kicks up the line to half-forward were getting picked off by the Swans talls though. We just seemed flat the whole second half of that game - no run. Unlike against Port.
