Nick Vlastuin

Remember Vlaus in his first year kicking a beautiful goal on the run against Melbourne at the G. Not sure where he was playing that day, may have been HFF or midfield off the bench but it's stuck in my memory that he knows how to kick a goal. I also vaguely recall he played in the midfield as a junior in TAC so I reckon he knows how to play the role. Pace may be his only question mark, but many others thrive in the guts without lightning type pace if they can read the play a dog in hard.
With the discussion on Houli being trialled elsewhere other than HBF I reckon he is only good for a wing, not a midfielders small finger imo because he ain't strong enough over the ball, won't win a ball or lay a tackle in tight and too slow by brain. He needs the space and time to run forward and long. He is not strong enough overhead and in a one on one to play HFF so HBF or wing for me as his only options in the 22.

His tank was also a concern when drafted. Not sure if this concern has been put to bed yet.

Personally I like his toughness in there. Other players have strengths and weaknesses too. He works well in tough places.

Shhhhh, it's only four years not five. Yes he actually is quite a capable back man, plays his role very well most weeks, even sneaks up the ground on occasion.
Now that he's physically matured and got some experience, they're going to try n expand his role to find out whether he can be a bits n pieces part time mid, or perhaps a full time mid. They even thought about doing this last year but we had so many players earmarked for defence that fell over with injury, they had no choice but to keep him back there.

Two things - has been physically mature for a while now.
And should have stayed in the midfield and developed last year, regardless of injuries to backs.
Had a goid midfield game against Hawthorn i think.
Short sighted as usual..

Great to hear Flossy played well in the midfield today, we will have a lot more grunt in the midfield this year with Flossy, Prestia, Caddy and Nankervis.

Vlastuin looked 5kg lighter to me. Very lean. Playing midfield he had his ankles broken two or three times in the first fifteen minutes. Miles and Prestia shredded him. But other than that he was very active, running hard and fast. Got to a lot of contests and won ball. And his kicking was, as usual, a highlight -but there was more of it. On Dusty for a while and was more influential IMO.

Flossy is an outside player by and large. Not a grunt.

He was probably BoG. Just an intra club but good signs.

From the little he has played with us over the past few years in the guts he IMO has always looked so well suited with his courage and attack on the ball, as others have said his good in the air and a very good user of the pill... No brainer to work his backside off and get him in the guts, out of all of todays reports i am happiest with his efforts, along with Conca and perhaps George & shorty.. Ok a few but good signs..

Vlastuin was in everything. A preseason with the mids seems to have worked on improving his aerobic capacity. He was hard at it inside and used it well on the spread. Kicked a couple, seemed to be BOG.

Looking forward to seeing how he goes in the JLT.

I wasn't there yesterday but had coffee this morning with someone who was and he couldn't stop talking about Vlastuin.

Big improvement will be no surprise.

We recruited a highly rated inside midfielder who lead his team throughout juniors then shunted him down in the back pocket for 4 years.

How to curb development 101. I'm expecting 20+ possies a game, 4-5 tackles, 4-5 clearances.

I hope you are right. Looking for Caddy to play a similar role and kick 30 to 40 goals resting forward between them.

Got better as the game went on. Liked him up forward and in the action.

Yeah agreed. Would have kicked 3 goals if he finished his work.

the give offs were frustrating, take the shot son.
this. The dude has to act like a leader now and always take responsibility when the shot is inside 50

One of the surprises of the game for me was Vlastuin's effectiveness up forward. His ability to win the ball in the air down back seems to work up forward as well - just so poised. Not obviously flashy but so nice to watch for the 50-50 ball.

Could be really good for us. Conca down back as Vlastuin's replacement isn't a bad thing either. I'll be watching this with real interest.

Has all the tools to be very good and is as hard as any going around, I just feel he needs a bit more whit line fever and to be in games more. Like most I like the move into the midfield but I think he may be best suited as a half back, in saying that I'd keep persisting with midfield time, in saying that has to lift in there
