Nick Vlastuin

Callum Mills i believe won his rising star nomination in the backline and had never played there before.

Sure did. In year one it's a great grounding.

Quick question, you reckon he's still a defender in five years?

I've mentioned earlier that I am a Nick Vlastuin h8tr. But I can see why Leysy would advocate a simple trial in the midfield.

TOT will speak his mind in the off season.

This is shaping up.

*smile*s.
Why would you be a nick vlaustin hater?

That's so damning on Hardwick. Vlastuin knows as long as Dimma is in charge, he's a back.

Depressing.

Can I just point out that if we had a better coach, people would be saying "suck it up nick, its not all about you, you don't get to choose where you play, its up to the coach"

Players can have their preferences, but ultimately its up to the coach to put the player where he thinks is best for the team, not the player... I'm not saying he isn't better in the midfield, I'm just saying at the end of the day it isn't really his choice.

Mcgovern a good example wanted to play foward but coach made him in the backline

Yet it wasn't a problem for Vickery to insist he prefers not to play ruck and therefore not have to play ruck much at all this year? Vlastuin was given midfield opportunity against top opposition and excelled and then thrown back into the backline. I understand why a player who rightly knows they can play a position well but isn't given the opportunity would choose to move elsewhere. Your time at AFL level is short and sometimes you may regret not filling your ambition due to not speaking up.

Brendon Gale retweeted a HUN article yesterday that flagged Nick's move to the midfield this year..

Gotta admit I am glad this is happening for 2 reasons.

1. Entering his 5th season, Vlaustin is now a senior player. As a high draft draft pick, we need to see whether he can indeed make the transition to the midfield or not. If not we become aware of his limitations. If so then we have another important rotation in the midfield & increases his value to us.
2. Half back is an important developmental position. Vlaustin being moved from there will provide important opportunities for the likes of Markov, CEllis, Drummond & Menadue to improve and gain valuable senior experience.

For reason number 2 I also think it's important to try Houli further up the ground as well & see if he's got other strings to his bow.
Pure flankers have to be absolutely exceptional now to hold down a cemented position on the ground but for the most part they're now expected to be hybrid midfielders as well.
Our team in recent times has carried too many one dimensional flanker types. The game is evolving quickly and the makeup of our team needs to change up to keep with the pace.

Question marks over Vlaustin's speed, tank & ability to accumulate possessions in a midfield role are about to be tested. Not before time..

Good one, Oldie - I agree that we need greater flexibility with our flankers and that they need to rotate through the middle. But I hope they bring something a bit special with it – not just make up the numbers.

Maybe Vlaus will bring a more defensive mind set to his midfield duties. Maybe he’ll have a tagging role or lay some body numbing tackles. Houli on the other hand might be brought in to add some offensive flair – the designated mid spearing the ball into the forwards after a chain of handballs, that sort of thing. I can even see Shorty making handy contributions in the middle.

And as we all know Cotchin, Martin and Caddy can go forward and play a significant role in the flanks / pockets there. This might allow Rioli, Lloyd and even Jack some time in the middle.

And it doesn’t really matter that they don’t have a huge tanks – they won’t be in the middle all game. So long as they give the opposition the conniptions (Jack’s in the guts – what to do, what to do?) and make a special contribution for the time that they’re there.

About time he moved into the middle. Plays hard and will be another strong body in the guts.
Good to see

We have better players than Houli for up the ground, if we are to become a genuine finals contender then Houli should be a depth player. ( 2016 was a shocker for Houli )

Only takin us 5 years to work out he's not a backman
Shhhhh, it's only four years not five. Yes he actually is quite a capable back man, plays his role very well most weeks, even sneaks up the ground on occasion.
Now that he's physically matured and got some experience, they're going to try n expand his role to find out whether he can be a bits n pieces part time mid, or perhaps a full time mid. They even thought about doing this last year but we had so many players earmarked for defence that fell over with injury, they had no choice but to keep him back there.

I like this move. Another hard body at the footy. It's important that we are hard to play against. With Caddy and Prestia also providing the muscle I would consider that out midfield is a tough one. I'm not sure I have ever been able to say that.

Really hoping that will be the case. Vlaus as mid could only help you'd think.

You're quite right in my opinion
