Nick Vlastuin

Yep agree very strange decision to not play him there. We took Miles out of the middle and replaced him with players that did not play directly in the middle. Lambert played HF and Menadue on the wing / a bit back / a bit forward. We ended up putting Edwards in there and personally I do not see him as a great midfielder, his skills are not there in tight, some think he is elite with his handballing, me not so much and that showed yesterday, twice he missed easy handballs when we were breaking (1 to Hampsons feet and the other behind the player he was hitting - can't remember who it was). Our games built around contested possessions and we got smacked by the Saints there which created the Saints to beat us with their outside game, beat the Saints are CP and you beat them. Simples. Edwards actually got 11 CP but unfortunately due to poor disposal wasted them, would have rather had someone better winning the ball through there.

Early days (in his first year) was playing more midfield than he is now.

Back then he had no tank but effective when in the guts.

Hardwick is all about defending and minimizing the opposition scoring. Vlastuin is his comfort blanket. He can't trust anyone to fill his spot.

What in the hell is going on with this guy?
We recruit Townsend because Dimmer said we needed a big bodied midfielder.
Wasn't this the reason why we recruited Floss?
Who screwed this one up?
The coach?
Development?
Recruiting staff?

Realise that Sin.

But it's not as is we're playing for sheep stations ATM.

Surely the benefit of potentially finding that big midfielder weighs well ahead of trying to plug a gap in the backline with a player losing confidence by the week.

BTW this was our illustrious coach in June:

“We’ve always sort of wanted to give him the opportunity to play (in the midfield). With Trent (Cotchin) being out, and probably our midfield being a little bit light at the moment, it was an opportunity to see how he went,” Hardwick said.

“He was pretty good early, but it’s one of those experiments that’s going to take a little bit of time to see the long-term benefits of it.

“It’s a different kettle of fish playing midfield as compared to down back. But I thought he showed some really good signs.

“He’s incredibly clean, tough. I enjoy what he gave us tonight (Friday night).

“He’ll only get better for the run . . .”
I don't think I defended it, in fact the opposite. I have wanted him in the guts since his first season.

Unfortunately that's not how Handbrake rolls - it never has been. He's always looking for the next win to save his skin rather than any sort of development.

How many times has Flossy been a great option to roll into the centre recently but instead he goes to the perenial losing well of Shank or Griggy who are in the twighlight of their careers; or goes a so-called 'stopper' option like Moore who is VFL quality.

Strange persistence with Nick in the back half is just not consistent with the experimentation mode we are in. Our midfield is weak and we have a potential a grader rotting in the back half. Disappointing.

Excellent posting. That is one reason why many of us feel that he has not come on as expected. As he has had to play too far back in defence. I want him to push forward as he has a nose for a goal and usually finishes his work unlike B Ellis, Cotchin and Houli.

Is there anyone on here who can defend the coaching staff not playing him in the midfield.

Even if he doesnt make it there, surely given the promising signs early in the year, our crucial need for a classy big body and the fact he's going backwards by the week in defence means it had to be given an extended run.

Sin, Brodders, Baloo...anyone!!!!

Leysy should know that I will come running if he asks nicely. But seriously, who is this anyone person anyway?
Um.....no.

Um.... I agree.

Only explanation I have is that we saw enough of him in the middle to know that's his go but we are saving it up for next year given we knew we were a long shot this year at that time?

I think we can take a few months on this question. (What's the rush?) It's a touchstone.

It doesn't matter if PRE is known as the best football forum in history. We know it.

And there is a long off-season ahead.

Hardwick not playing Vlastuin in the midfield is the central issue - after the Port loss (when it was time to experiment). And even for 50% game time would've been ok. Just for one game.

Is that the right shape of the question, gentlemen? It has to be a separate thread.

After we mothballed our season how could Hardwick possibly have failed to experiment with Vlastuin in a midfield role?

That's the question, isn't it? I think that's what you're arguing, Bryan, and it's a minimal proposition. Jut an experiment is all you're looking for. He doesn't have to be #1 mid. 50% game time in one game would cover it.

This is a really good topic to cover in the off season for a bit.

It is and I have another one

How about " should Damien Hardwick be our Coach " ? We haven't discussed that one very much yet

Better to go with " Why is the dud still our coach?" Should bring out some interesting comments from the apoligists!

Interesting that you teach them a word like apologists, you seem to be obsessed by it ..and them.
