Nick Vlastuin

Probably more a victim of circumstance. With Houli, Yarran, Morris, Batchelor, McIntosh, Hunt all missing large parts of the year for various reasons (injury/form/ability), and Grimes, Astbury and Rance missing a couple here and there we've needed him in the backline due to lack of other options. Hopefully next season with at least a couple of those guys playing regularly we'll see him with more mid time

Was worried we'd drafted a slow, foot soldier type plodder.

Then thought I was wrong. Beginning to think my first instinct was right. Typical Frank pick in the making.

Reckon a new coach would give him an extended run in the midfield and you would see a different player.

Was recruited as a midfielder and not played there. People forget how good he was in 2013. Play him as a ruck rover & tell him to take game on - he'll be a different player straight away.

I hope so JB.

At this point, he looks a bust as a first rounder in my eyes (plays like a 2nd round pick). I still think his endurance isn't good enough to go on ball, which is a slight on our fitness people after being in the system so long.

We MUST get our first rounders right as an absolute minimum. No exception. I'd desperate to see egg smash all over my head with this guy, but the weight of evidence is stacking up.
Put Ben Lennon in that category too.

Reckon Vlastuin is a very good HBF if he remains there. The tigers always seem dissatisfied when a player cannot play in the midfield. If that is so do not pick Lennon - trying to convert him from a HFF. Then this year Rioli who is a small forward and not a midfielder. Lennon, Vlastuin and Rioli are best suited to primary roles elsewhere. Some minutes in the midfield is possible. If they are good in positions other than midfield that is great. You can always argue about drafting too high or too low. Drafting Conca as a midfielder makes sense except he isn't very good. C Ellis will be fine as a mid. B Ellis as a outside midfielder will also be fine.

Time to get his confidence back & stop wasting him at the same time. Put him in the guts for the last 4 games. Time to stop wasting 1st round picks to play small down back

Best position on the flank?
*smile*, another first round pick used on a flanker.

Nick is another you simply cannot judge until he is under the tutelage of a quality coach that will instill confidence in his game.

While I certainly don't think our pick 9 in the 2012 draft is a bust, I think we pretty much have what we expected to get when we drafted flossy. A good hard working, role player that comfortably sits in our second tier. Never going to be an A grade star in the midfield, key knock on him in his jr days was he was never a high possession getter as he never had the tank, but a good honest foot solider.

Makes me wonder given how bad our ruck stocks are at the moment, and seeing how well Grundy is developing with amazing upside (gave Hammer an absolute bath last night), makes me think if we had our time again how whether we should have been braver and drafted him instead. I know it would have been a risk drafting a ruckman (and a lot of other clubs passed on him too), but our drafting of Nick has pretty much been our typical recruitment approach the past few years....i.e. draft a safe foot solider who will likely play a solid 200 games, however has zero x factor.

A favourite of mine, but looking pretty ordinary at the moment and not really developing. Definitely should go into the midfield - he may blossom.

Exactly, FT. Release the shackles and let the fellow show his stuff around the action. Reckon he could develop into a player who could/should spend sizable time in the mid-field, particularly at stoppages.

Dimma's game plan and coaching panel is not doing him and others any favours. I appreciate they have to be able to play in various positions at certain times in the career but playing someone consistently in the wrong role when they have the talent to be really good elsewhere is detrimental to the player and the team. Just another example of not coaching the best out of a player

Can I ask why do the Tigers name him on the ball virtually every Thursday night? Who are they trying to fool, the opposition?

Pretty sure all clubs just put out a list of players n the names are just shoved somewhere on the form.
Old school tradition sees the media still trying to slot players into the typical irrelevant positions on the oval, when in reality there's only a couple of regular positions on the ground. Everyone else is now just a rolling contested mauler or transitional runner.

I understand team selection is irrelevant on Thursday but Vlastuin has played once in the midfield this year (from memory) yet he's selected in the starting midfield position every week. Are the Tigers hierarchy just taking the p!ss?

Which starting midfield? The one on our site or the site that cannot be named? Both are always very different. No idea why.

A big bodied mid is what we desperately need and we might have one right under our noses. Just find out if he can play the position or not.
