Nathan (Axel) Foley [MERGED]

I am one who has never lost faith in Axel so it was great to see him carve open the field again with confidence. Give him a run now and see is confidence in his body grow and he will prove his value to the team.

Silly stuff yello_tj.

If you knew what Axle has had to go through you wouldnt be talking such rubbish. ::)

I'm not as forgiving as you as I understand you accept mediocrity

This was a decent game against a non afl standard team

I feel so sorry for Ax. At the top of his game his destroys his ankle. 3 years of battling he starts to find some form and does his Achilles.

My dad did his Achilles when he was about 40. He was a very good tennis player but said that no matter how much work he did on leg he never got the strength, explosiveness, mobility or flexibility back.

I hope Ax can find something close to his athleticism again and be a strong week to week contributor.

Played a good game today.

There has been some significant changes in Achilles treatment in the last 12-24 months. I believe the research was done in Melbourne on one of the AFL clubs, can't remember which one. But the theory is eccentric strengthening rather concentric as far as I can understand. In short it has made a significant change in the time and quality of recovery.

An unsung contribution of our sport.

Love his pace but his 25-30m kicking hasn't changed. In the space of a minute today he put one over the head of Lennon on the lead and the put another one short to his opponent when he called for it over the top.

IMHO both he and Cotchin impact the ball high and forward of their grounded leg when kicking which means they can't kick it very long and it is difficult to control the length of their short kicks because the tendency is to chip it up rather than drill it flat. The contrast is Martin who impacts the ball much closer to the bottom of the arc.

I thought that his goal in the 2nd qtr was actually a pass gone wrong.

That was the impression I also had at the time, Run. Thought Foley played a most serviceable game, but his kicking to position will always be spasmodic.

Agree think he should start but im guessing he will be subbed on at halftime or shortly after for a big man when the rain comes down as others have said...

A smart decision to have him the sub tonight. With Jacko in real trouble again and due to be subbed out at halftime he is ready and willing for the second half. Go Axel!

Foley was once in line to be our next captain when Newman got the gig. He was named then as VC instead. So Foley is a player who would understand leadership. Another thing Foley understands is getting a clearance, breaking the lines, and moving the ball forward.

Our team is crying out for leadership, clearances, ability to take the game on we start Foley as sub. Only at Richmond.

I fear he is out of favour for some reason... Cannot comment on his physiological conditioning, plus we do not see enough of him to add our subjective commentary. I would like to see him in the starting line up and then we can comment on his performance in a more rounded manner after a full match.

Agree. Lets have a look at what he can do in a whole game.

I couldn't imagine our starting midfield without the great Shaun Grigg starting in the middle! I'd have Foley in there instead of that twit any day of the week

It does seem he is out of favour with the coach for some unknown reason
Can guarantee his physiological conditioning is all good his body may have given up
On him a bit but his mindset is still the same

It must be hard for Nathan being treated this way. Similar to Whitey. Two players with real G&D who always give 100% but are treated with a bit of contempt. Pity if Nathan's body is letting him down a bit after all the work he's put in. I can't help but wonder how much better he'd be if he was feeling more valued and could play with confidence and positivity.

Out of favour because he won't follow softwicks game plan, only knows how to break lines and kick it long, not sideways, backwards and stupid little handpasses to a player surrounded by the opposition, A tad slower these days but still one of our best midfielders
