Nathan (Axel) Foley [MERGED]

I thought he provided some nice run out of the midfield at times, that one kick was a shocker, but he did more positives than negatives on the weekend.

The injury killed him as an AFL footballer. The body won't do what he wants it to anymore. The idea of using him as a mentor for the VFL side is a good one, he may even turn into a coach down the track.

I agree, he probably did more tackles and 1%'s in one game than the rest of the soft and easy to peel bananas have done all season.

Wallace killed him as an footballer by playing him injured. We sometimes forget how good Nath was, AA squad, International Rules player. Hasn't been that sort of player for years. Probably gone on a year too long like Newman and King.

I'd forgotten just how quick he was. Serious wheels. Young, fit Nate would be perfect right about now.

I used to love those long goals and long kicks into the forward line from breakaways out of the centre at pace. He just can't do it anymore. It's sad really.

You know when the footage shows that his teammates are Pettifer, Hyde, Simmonds, Brown among others that his speedy, long kicking best was soo long ago. ( dont miss the yellow shorts either)

He was one of those players who'd look behind, see someone on his hammer, then take off. A rare bird. He clearly can't do that any more, so he's been attempting to reinvent a truncated version of Axel, relying on pressure acts, quick hands and inside ball. I've given up on him being the former but not the latter. Not completely. If he's a working class type he will be competing with the likes of Arnott, Miles and Jackson though.

Jack Steven. That's who it is. Boy, could we do with that right now.

The rarest of rare birds. Win the ball and have breakaway pace.

Not his fault. It's not effort, it's time. But having said that, he's contract is a shocker.

Cap space is as important as anything these days.

2009 since he last showed his best form reliably. Not his fault as you say, but that's a long time to be waiting for a player to get back. Looked tradeable at the time he signed his last contract, but three years said the club was confident about his future. We got it wrong.

Should have been traded to GWS when they came into the comp. He had some trade then. Now, absolute no trade. A Grand F***up again.

Just go back 6 months let alone 3 years. People on here would have your gooolies if you mentioned off loading him.
I was one of the very few that wanted him traded, the day hardwick walked into the doors.
In Todays market you couldn't even get a Morton trade, and that's discrageful.

another rfc player in retirement..being paid by this rabble

hasnt had a good game since 2009

I remember him being very very good in 2012 until getting injured. He was a critical player for us when we beat the Hawks and the swans.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, its easy to say we shoiuld have traded him but at the time not to many would have agreed. I think Foley deserve a bit more respect than he gets, he went to war many times for us and was a true warrior , he was our best midfielder a few years ago and played some great footy in 2012 after a long layoff, 2013 wasn't great but he wasn't the worst player on the weekend and deserves a few games to see if he can re-adapt to the speed of seniors

When you call for 80% of the list to be traded or delisted you will eventually get a few right.

Foley was good enough to persist with in case he got back to his old form. Even now, though not as quick, he could remodel his game into an in and under. Don't doubt the commitment and mental strength of the kid to change his game. To still be at an AFL level after all his injuries proves he is mentally tough enough for what gets thrown at him.

Fingers crossed Nathan can continue to improve as his fitness improves. He's coming from a long way behind but I'm still very happy to have him out there.

I thought about the club offering him up for trade when he still had some currency before the injury issues hit. On the basis that to get something decent you have to give something decent. I didn't consider it after the injuries though, because I knew we wouldn't get anything for him and he still had some good footy in him. He did have a few good games in 2012, but the injuries caught up with him again and in hindsight that's when the club should have pulled the trigger and let him go.
