Nathan (Axel) Foley [MERGED]

Genuinely not his fault because of injuries (and great bloke) but he has been washed-up for a few seasons now. The Tiges really should have traded him 2-3 seasons ago. It's decisions like these that you just have to nail.

When you call for 80% of the list to be traded or delisted you will eventually get a few right.

Foley was good enough to persist with in case he got back to his old form. Even now, though not as quick, he could remodel his game into an in and under. Don't doubt the commitment and mental strength of the kid to change his game. To still be at an AFL level after all his injuries proves he is mentally tough enough for what gets thrown at him.
I am not surprised he is a little slower after his serious Achilles injury but he still has his smarts and commitment. Maybe you are right that he will prolong his career if he remodels his game. I, for one, hope so

Nathan is one of those guys whose key AFL attribute was his ability to bounce and burst. He could get in and under and then bounce up and burst away from packs. Nothing else in his game is good enough to make him a valuable contributor on-field if he can't bounce and burst. He can't weave through packs and find space with awareness, he is not a natural rover with good lateral movement for the forward line, nor is he tall enough or good enough defensively to go back and play a defensive role and his outside skills are not good enough to play an accumulator wingmen role like Montagna or a loose man set up play role like Ellis.

Once his legs were gone and he lost his ability to bounce and burst and beat his opponent to the next contest as a link player so to was his ability to be a valuable contributor as opposed to a role player at this level. Although his legs seem to be getting healthier I would be absolutely stunned if he could ever get them back to a point where it is an elite attribute in comparison to his opponents that gives him an edge. This is why I expect him to be finishing up in a few weeks and sailing off into the sunset with Jakey King, Chris Newman, Aaron Edwards, Orren Stephenson and maybe even Matt Thomas.

Highlights reel showed why he does not fit in now,... straight down the corridor, couple of bounces, kicking long direct goals. He should have been going to the pockets for a boundary line throw ins.

Hardwick talked about kicking Jack up the ar$e this week.

Well if anyone is entitled to a free kick up Dimma's clacker its Foley.

I've listened to posters get stuck into Foley this year on the basis that his 10 possesion qtrs coming on as a sub in rds 1 and 2 weren't enough.

He has one start (ie last week), plays a ripper first half and then fades out and is immediately made sub.

Plays 3 quarters today for 21 possessions and a goal.

Dimma needed a boot just for droppng him in last year's final. Having Nathan start just 1 game this year is Hob nail worthy.

Thought he played well today. Clearance work was excellent, some signs of the Foley of old.

Seems he can still play. If only he was give. Half the chances grigg has he may build match fitness and confidence and return to something like the old.
Hopefully he stays in now and plays. We need his run!!

In another 3 weeks, provided there's no more sub vests for him, he'll show he's still a quality player.

Good stuff Axel.

Some signs of the Axle of old.

Just about everyone had written him off.

Lets hope his form of today continues for the rest of the year.

Fit and firing Foley is very important for us.

That burst out of the centre today and goal brought back some fond memories of axel. Hopefully he can continue on given a chance.

A 5 year contract extension after today's effort

Of course that won't happen going by your comment I assume you thought he went ok. Good to read.
