Matthew McDonough

Re: Welcome Matthew McDonough at pick 42

Reading the coaches VFL report I'd be surprised if he is picked this week. He said it was his best game for several weeks and that he if can play like that consistently he will be pushing for selection.

I though that he had named in the best for his last few games!!!

Yep, not disagreeing. Both show glimpses of real promise.

Disagree.

specialist sub and scapegoat is his best position
Yep. He seems to have earned a promotion up to the Seniors on the back of some good VFL form. Needs to be given a full game though, playing him as the sub and then dropping him next week is just pointless at this stage of his career. Lets see if he can play at this level.

Correct two wrongs don't make a right but I think it is fair to pose the question that if Mcd had been given 11 straight games with high % game time would his output have been greater than that of Morris.

Rhetorical question

Matt McDonough
28 disposals, five clearances, three goals

Had his best game for several weeks. Won a lot of ball and also impacted the scoreboard. If he can play like this on a consistent basis, he’s going to be pushing hard for senior selection. It’s the standard that he needs to be at.

Has Clarke lost his marbles?? Since when does a 28 disposal 3 goal game be 'the standard'?

That's an exceptional game of footy. Numbers like that aren't the standard especially if you are hitting the scoreboard with three goals.

Then you read his write up on Gordon and Dea and you wonder why our reserves are in the sh!t. What a twat Clarke is.

And even with his quieter games thrown in he's averaging ~22 touches and ~1.5 goals. I know stats don't tell the whole story but really, they're good numbers. Some are held to a higher standard than others it seems.

Re: Welcome Matthew McDonough at pick 42

Won't be any grumbling from me if Madonna gets a couple of games while Corey is out injured. he's had a couple of years of ressies footy n worked up from being a med forward, done some work off half back n plenty of mid n forward this year. Can't cause major problems having a good hard look at what he can do over a few consecutive games, he'd be thoroughly match hardened n a future prospect. Not sure Lambert would be ready after one game back from two months out, n unfortunately Newy's not the future so would only really consider the old silver back now if we desperately needed to plug an injury hole.

Re: Welcome Matthew McDonough at pick 42

is fitness and strength an issue?
he seems to play his best football in the vfl as an inside mid, but if he isnt fit or strong enough he will struggle at AFL level.

i would to see him come in and be given plenty of time on the ball at some stage soon.

I'm a big McDonough fan, but I've had an inkling this may be the issue.

Hey, 28 touches and 3 goals is the standard Morris sets....

If this is the standard the Newman shouldn't be playing this weekend.

Re: Welcome Matthew McDonough at pick 42

Poor fella, I hold out little hope for him now. Been shunted to every corner of the park. Has talent no doubt but we've shuffled him so far he doesn't what is what.

Deserves a chance to play as a half forward, mid for six weeks. But won't get it.

Just a yes-man. Seems to contradict Madonna's performance in Short's review saying "it was a tough game for small forwards'.

Looks to have lost condition from the pre season. Don't see too many AFL players with a tummy.

Not the be all end all. Just an observation.
He is no Greek Adonis.

But he has footy smarts and talent. He needs to be rewarded for his consistent performance at VFL level.

Re: Welcome Matthew McDonough at pick 42

McDonough like Lennon has had his back slapped by people for there obvious talent since early juniors.

Type of players that if they have a run of poor form they rest on there laurels waiting for the next burst of form during a game or season and used to be back slapped regardless.

These 2 are early examples of Richmond not gifting games but waiting for players to demand games.

Occasionally Richmond does gift games to gauge that players reaction and many young players experience that such as C.Ellis & Menadue who have both shown they are not shy, not afraid and follow instruction.

Mc Donough & Lennon are certainly talented enough maybe not hungry enough. Menadue, McIntosh & C.Ellis have been a valuable learning curve to both these players. McDonough should get an extended run and I think will make a name for himself

Surely there's a spot in the side for plugger , a player choco described as the most talented and smartest footballer on our list .
Just need's to work harder .
