Maybe.

The way I read it is that just about all small/mediums get a stint at halfback. It doesn't mean that everyone is a halfback but that Dimma wants flexible running players who have the ability to swing into different roles and have also learned to be accountable.
Agree. Dimma wants flexibilty with his players. McDonough might be experimented at hallf back before he ends up settling up forward for the rest of his career. Hence why in the short term the games he plays will be down back.

Growing with every game. Superb skills. Calm in heat. Powerful overhead as we saw today. He's ready. Just pick him.

Can't see how he will miss round 1. Good against Collingwood and even better against Essendon.
See how quickly things happen, we couldn't find any good kids 5 years ago and all of a sudden we have some of the best, Ellis, conca, big V and this kid isn't fair away either....

Re: Welcome Matthew McDonough at pick 42

Surely will play round one ... Was fabulous today

Re: Welcome Matthew McDonough at pick 42

Will play round 1. Showed class, composure, courage and a football brain...

Re: Welcome Matthew McDonough at pick 42

like him alot. reads the play well. gets involved. gives and goes. good neat skills

Re: Welcome Matthew McDonough at pick 42

This kid has a real footy brain. Some of his decision making and reading of the play looks exceptional for someone with so little experience at the top level.

Re: Welcome Matthew McDonough at pick 42

For those who watched games at Coburg early in 2013 McDonough is almost unrecognisable. He has worked really hard on his fitness clearly.

He looked a long way off AFL physically 12 months ago.

Re: Welcome Matthew McDonough at pick 42

I like a player that knows what to do with the pill as soon as he gets it. Always aware, always thinking about what to do next. Needless to say I like Madonna a lot. He's positively Jack-like in his awareness and smarts. And for now - I'd keep him in the backline. He seems to have grown exponentially as a player back there.

Morris should be fractionally concerned.

Hmmm. Interesting thought. Another back pocket option I think is what you're suggesting. Cool.

Morris is a lockdown specialist though. I'm not sure he's got that much competition for that role.

Not now. Not yet. But don't you get the feeling with this kid that he hates to get beaten? I do.

Until yesterday I'd only really noticed his neat disposal and clear decision making. Had a bit of scrap about him didn't he.

I think Morris is our single most underrated player.

Was not beaten by an opponent last year, and is our ONLY small, quick, shut down defender. Attacks the ball like a pitbull with a brain injury, yet rarely gives away free kicks. On top of that, he runs and moves the ball quickly out of the backline and creates when he gets it.

Very little is said about him, but you couldn't ask for more.

Madonna may come into the 22, but it won't be at Morris' expense. His new long term contract underlines just how the coaches view him.
