Re: Pick 42 Matt Thomas

He's the barometer of where the coach's vision is at.
Currently self preservation level is at super ninja.
I've begun to think it's not self preservation, Bryan.
I've got a thousand things to say about Thomas. I'll cut it down.
Strategically Thomas is a logical sub to give cover to Miles who has to tire. He's not seasoned. We use Miles as #1 inside mid for as long as he can go and then we send in a fresh Thomas to give him some cover. (Cotchin is getting just the chop out we all want here.) We keep stretching young Miles in a development season for him. Thomas is the cavalry. Development. Strategic. All good.
Thomas is an assault weapon. And a useful one. Our plan A is assault. We are a first to the ball team. In controlled waves, counter-pointed by months of ball insecurity. Thomas is used in sledgehammer plays - stands off the contest then runs through it, gathering or taking one of them out. Or he sits under it and then dishes badly by hand.
But he does not chase. (Did he chase today? I missed it.) And this is where it gets interesting. He could chase but he doesn't. Even Chris Judd is slow when he's standing in the middle of the ground with his hands on his hips. Defensive running is not Thomas's job. He is assault not defence.
Yeah, sure he's injured. He can't walk like half his team-mates. But he doesn't get a call to the phone when he's witnessing their break away. Because that's the plan. To stick to the tactical superiority of the coach at the expense of football values.
The coach is not in survival mode. He is in suicide mode.
Not a month ago Paul Roos demonstrated what football values do to tactics. *smile* pace. We won't run. Matt Thomas won't run. Hardwick has coached the fundamentals out of the team.
Hey, he can conceive and coach offensive plays. (Maybe he really is a genius.) But at what cost?

If the bad guy with the ball isn't right in front of him (and not moving), he's out of the game.
That's how I see it, spook.
