List Management 2023

I think season 2024 has me completely confused - I have absolutely no idea what to expect. We do have some quality kids who showed something this year, even if it was just for a game or two, and enough elite which, if they all put it together could surprise.
N
But we will clearly be non contenders at this years draft - there are to many other clubs who already have 2 good picks in the first round for us to do much tbh.

New coach effect maybe, new game plan maybe, we could do a hawthorn and bomb or do a Pies and bounce - I have absolutely no clue right now.

A great article on the AFL site by Cal Twomey comparing Essendon and Melbourne's drafting since 2017. Melbourne's has been a master class of nailing middle and late range draft picks. Jason Taylor is the best in the business at the moment. Our success rate is closer to Essendon's unfortunately.

We take risks with late picks and we find gems like Graham, Bolton and Martin
Its when we have a top end pick we shitt ourselves and go conservative.
We select the one that speaks well, did well at school and has good mates.

Considering that during 2017 to 2020 inclusive the lowest we finished was losing a prelim, we didn't have much in the way of drafting selections so we didn't have massive opportunity. We got 2017 pretty well, then struggled a bit, but still got some decent youngsters during those years. 2021 onward is still wide open as to how we went as it's way to early to call anyone from that draft. Smelbourne nailed 2017 and 2019, solid in 2018 while 2020 was meh.
Essendrugs drafting and trading ever since the master list manager Dodo has been in control is fairly relevant to his namesake, pretty much extinct.

The mail has been strong for over a year that we're getting Jacob Koschitzke. 23 years old, 196cm. 48 games, 54 goals - half of which came in 2021, his first and best year. 18 goals last year (16 games) and 9 this year from 12 games.

This is not an AFL key forward. He's a backman. That's where he played as a kid, and that's where his future lies in the bigs, if he has one. That's okay, we need a backman. He's strong aerially and good one-on one. Excellent. He can release Balta to the forward line. Should be relatively cheap. Third-rounder? If we can trade out Hugo for a third that's a big win.

Now, how do we get Tarryn Thomas?

B: Young Koschitzke Gibcus
HB: Rioli Broad Vlastuin
C: Pickett Thomas Ross
HF: Baker Martin Prestia
F: Balta Lynch Cumberland
R: Ryan Taranto Bolton
I: (from) Hopper Short Trezise Clarke Banks Brown Bauer Sonsie Rioli Coutlhard

Hugo, Graham, KMac, Soldo, Vlastuin, Short, Cumbo, Sonz, Miller all on the table for the right price. Most wouldn't fetch much, but we're trying to bundle for pick 4. Floss or Short might get you a pick around 20.
Forward line is still too slow.
IN fact its gone into cliff young shuffle territory.
Opportunities have to be given to Clarke Coulthard and MR. Not just as small forwards but to play up the ground as the 7th onballer

Without knowing Koschi at all its the right play. Bring in a solid backman and release Noah's flood (of goals)

Thomas an ideal football type. I'd ask the question.
I'M also interested to see what the Prince could do onball. Its robbing peter to pay paul, shifting the best rebounding defender in Dan Rioli but we have coverage. Banks Brown Smith Short Baker step into that role. Lets see what zip and press we can get with DR onball.

Wings we could get Dylan Stephens from Sydney. Agile, smooth mover, brisk but not elite fast. Shanky kick. Upgrade on Dow. Could be cheap as swans prefer Gulden and Mcinerney.

As much as I hate it I can see value in placing the Short, Prestia and Vlastuin cards in the trade pile.

If you are west coast do you take Miller?
Theyre key defenders are McGovern Barass Rotham Bazzo.
Miller could provide coverage for them - he'd have played 15+ games for them this year.
Their 3rd for Miller and our 4th?

When you look at our key position player stocks, Miller is worth alot more to us then them

After seeing Banks, Trezise & Brown flourishing on the big stage towards season’s end I’m quietly excited by the prospect of forgotten Tiger Kaleb Smith next season too..
Seth Campbell also showed glimpses in the 5mins he got to play in the VFL all yr.

We can't afford to be trading KPP players, the depth is bare as it is.

So what's the issue with trading Miller? He doesn't exactly play like a key.
He's my biggest player disappointment of 23. His improvement last year was significant. He seemed to be ready to be a good, mobile, athletic ruck/forward to give Nank some relief. I could see why you'd give him 2 yrs.
Miller sold us a Jeep Grand Cherokee, but it had a Vespa motor under the hood.

All offers for players other than Dan Noah and Shai will be considered, but hard to imagine that Shorty or any of those recruited since 21, would be released.
He has been great for us, had no injury problems and still has 100 or so left in the tank.

Yeah, probs right re slow forward line. Move Dion to the bench and bring on Clarke. Maybe Coulthard for Cumbo.

Stephens is a cat.

The Prince to the midfield is a thought. Short did okay in midweek company last year but otherwise probably not quite up to it. Daniel a better contested and burst player, so a better chance to make it. But would hurt our rebound.

Agreed Stephens is a cat.

Short, Banks and Brown as rebound. I reckon K Smith comes on fast too.
Its not as good as The Prince but we win onball.
Besides I think our MC has struggled to find other avenues forward. If our run game is shut down we too quickly switch to Down The Line.
In essence we've tried to replicate the glory years, switch Bachar for Daniel. But the new game is far more central corridor driven.
Early on we did try chipping to halfway and then handball kamikaze.
So reshaping the half back line will be significant. Lets get more options to move forward

Don't worry about that, you are not alone as the club has no idea right now as well

Agree with some - DRioli to rotate through the midfield and forward line next year. Let the kids in Banks Brown Trezise Sonsie Smith develop on the back flanks.

My only worry with Dan Rioli forward or potentially in the centre is whether his ankle/foot issues really are healed. We want Dan to have a long career and we all know he played injured for a lot of 2023. Unless his injuries truly heal I am not convinced he should be moved.
