I am excited as any about McJesus's prospects but I don't expect any sort of performance at senior level before 2016. The reality is he will need to be functional as a big man (ie. take 7-10 marks a game) to demand a tall defender and then the small man highlights reel will be Hollywood-grade. Until then, he will attract a mobile defender at senior level who will simply run off him at will. Imagine a Josh Gibson gathering 50 possessions in a game versus McJesus nil.

Very good post.
I was excited by one of his marks this week where he had a really good leap at it in a contested situation.
Obviously he's excellent below his knees (relative to other talls) but he needs to use his height to have the greatest impact at AFL level.
I think it makes perfect sense that they are trying to develop weak areas of his game. heck we've been criticised in the past for poor development of tall forwards and now we're looking to rectify this we're still being criticised.

I thought his ruck work was sensational , even had a chuckle to myself at one stage, think I read somewhere he won 19 ruck contests, ?? didnt think it was that many but jumped high & won many & was a pleasure to behold.

wow and wow.

was he going up against a decent ruckman?. This kid is SOOOOOOOOOOOO exciting.

4 goals, 12 disposals (9 contested), 3 marks
Another solid game in terms of scoreboard involvement. Played in the ruck due to Shaun Hampson’s late injury, which was a new role for him. It helped him get more contested possessions up the ground but we still want him marking the ball. Took three but we want that number to be seven to ten.

Are these coaches pedantic and asking for too much?

FFS, I don't care if he gets it through the big sticks from lauching the ball out of his sphinkter like a cannon, if he scores 4 snags a week without fail, get him in.

I said earlier in this thread that it feels like he's held to criteria that dont seem to apply to others. Last week it was his lack of defensive pressure. This week it's not enough marks. They want 7-10 marks from him.

Jack averages 5.8 marks a game, Ty 3.8, Hampy 1.8, Ivan 3.3 and A Edwards 4.3.

I wonder why Liam has to better all of them?

I think both Liam and the club would be very concerned if he hadn't act least made his debut by 2016.

I'll be looking forward to the 'he has to learn his defensive side' comments from coaches in 2015. IMO, he's just a natural forward like Jack and really doesn't need to. Just let him do his job in attack.

Agree, but my specific point was that I don't expect any output from him at AFL level by 2016. I assume if all goes well he will get a few games next year, maybe more than that, but my expectations will be low other than a few highlights given his current skinny body limitations and limited engine pitted against experienced AFL defenders.

Fair enough. I just read it as not making his debut until 2016. I too would be surprised if he doesn't significantly impact a game until that time either.

2016 will be SHOWTIME BABY

I'll translate. "He's too bloody skinny and Thompson, Lake, McPharlin, Richards etc will snap him like a twig."

then the question must be asked: would Dustin Fletcher?

Too true. No hurry to promote him, he's not going anywhere.

yeah the whole 'take x number of marks' thing is good in theory, but geez we're not talking about handing him the keys to dad's corvette, we're just giving him a jumper and a taste of the excitement to come, a feel for senior footy.

Lennon didn't have to do a hell of a lot to get some good looks.

why can't he take more grabs at senior level anyway? lace out delivery from Deledio and co. is bound to be worth a couple.

Whoever does the stats down there definitely exaggerates the amount of hit outs these guys get :hihi Earlier this season they said the big O had 65 hit outs - I dont even reckon there were that many ruck contests!

You got that right. Some of the disposal on the highlights is a disgrace. He'd take more marks standing in the middle of Punt Rd.

Defenders play on forwards, forwards don't play on defenders. The Essendon coach will decide who would play on Beano if he was to play.
