Liam McBean

I assume nothing and I'd reckon AFL coaches would have a number of strategies to neutralise a green bean (see what I did there). Although I dig the McBean vibe, I'm very aware that most tall players take 3-5 years to develop, and I'm also aware that with his light build the first thing opposition coaches will do is use stronger more physically developed players against them, whether talls or shorts.

I also think the weight of expectation that some people are putting onto a guy who has not played a senior AFL game yet is totally ridiculous, especially given their attitude to someone like a Vickery who has come along very nicely but still has a "he'll never make it" air of judgement from some posters.

Not at you Ant, but many saying he'll take a long time to make an impact are forgetting Liam is miles away from where he was at the end of last year fitness wise.

The best talls cant give away fitness, form & touch to their opponents let alone a 19 y.o kid 2 weeks back from 6 months out.

Last week is not a reflection on where he's at. In two/three months it will be. By then leysy's tip is he'll be closer than what many here think to making it at AFL lvl. Brightsiders saying he'll need 5 yrs & Darksiders saying he'll never make it included.

Leysy your comments about McBean made this weeks podcast. They were talking about the size of his engine (backside). Richo is going to do a top 5 on it next week.

Well said. Some people just don't seem to grasp the set of skills Liam brings to the table.

Along with Jack, a seriously smart player both on the ground and in the air.

It's all very good for supporters to nod their heads sagely and say he's years away but that's superficial analysis at best.

Someone like a Tyrone Vickery is more a steady as she goes type, and might well be a great player, but McBean can expect to chart a different trajectory altogether.

If McBean's strength is at ground level you can be sure senior coaches will make sure of that matchup by playing a strong bodied third tall on him.
Buddy Franklin is a freak when the ball hits the turf for a tall and brushes that type of opponent off with ease.
Perhaps Liam's lost some fitness but not sure he possesses that type of athleticism. That said few ever have in the history of the game.

In saying that I haven't seen enough of McBean yet to pass judgement on what he is/isn't capable of yet and it would be grossly unfair to after half a quite NAB praccie game coming off an ankle injury.

The one thing I really noticed about Daniher last week that really stood out was his ability to jump on people's heads.
He may have some kicking issues but he is going to create some real chaos in the forward line with his aerial skills.
McBean seems much more of a lead up type player. At his height he'll have to be exceptional at it.
Hoping he is.

That's correct ToO, and why more than a few experts (as opposed to mug punters like me) are whispering in the corridors. Buddy is ridiculous, no one can be Buddy.

McBean will play in the same style though. High leads to the flanks, deft double back and precise delivery or a shot at goal. That's his go.

Pisser, I emailed that suggestion to tiger talk only last week!

You're assuming he gets a gorilla. Say injury strikes jack and Tyrone assumes power forward #1 and the hampster power forward #2 (rotating). Not many teams have a third tall that could go with bean both aerially and across the ground.

I would be satisfied with around 5-7 games from the bean. He's good enough to compensate for his unbearable lightness of being.

Unbearable lightness of Bean. Good one.

The reports of beanies demise are wildly exaggerated. Folks are tainting the legend after a half a practice match from a bloke with a recently busted ankle.

My old man is as pessimistic and conservative tiger as they come. He watched beanie in the vfl last year. I asked him what he reckoned. "Better than daniher" he said simply. My old man is not one for superlatives.

Your old man knows his sh!t Golly.

Daniher is the heir to Travis Cloke: a massive, marking behemoth who sprays them everywhere (we've had one of those). 'Unbearable' plays and kicks like Jack Gunston, only four inches taller. If and when Vickery becomes the main man, and Jack is the floating soccer No.10 (I see him as the AFL's Dennis Bergkamp), Beanie will be the best third banana in the business and defenders won't sleep the night before playing the Tiges.

Thanks spook. We're getting this thread back on the front foot. Doubt, cynicism and negativity belongs on the Andrew demetricon thread, not here.

Can't wait till Richo podcasts the scoop on beanies engine room next week. If that doesn't silence the critics, I dunno what will.

Nice one MB. Cheers. Good to see the word on McBeans arse, spreading.

Yes there is a comma in there. ;D

Scares the hell out of me that the big fella is havin ankle problems, his agility is the freakishness about the pole, an ankles can stay foo barred for life.....great signs otherwise

I hear ya, CC, but a four goal game coming off a very short pre season allays my concerns somewhat. It suggests he must be moving ok.

Juicy thoughts in a couple of years. Beanie, The Griffin and Rocket Man all in the same forward line.

The father, son and Holy Spirit.
