You are conveniently forgetting that they also played forward in the 2s. Just like Jack did and just like TV did. Jack & TV both showed that they had what it takes to be a forward when playing in the 2s. They each got promoted to the 1s as forwards and showed that they have what it takes to be a forward in the AFL. So the club left Jack & TV as forwards. Jack & TV didn't need to be played down back, as part of their development, to get enough ball to be good AFL level forwards.

If other players, including Griffith's and Elton, don't show that they have what it takes to be a good forward in the 2's, the best thing for their development isn’t promoting them to the 1s (and dropping players who are doing better than them). They obviously need more development in the 2s to be AFL level players. If they aren't getting it when forward in the 2s, then try something else like playing them down back.

Elton seemed to be showing some promise in the second half of this season, so his development is heading in the right direction. However, not every player recruited by AFL clubs will make it. Let's hope that those 2 do, but they need to show more this pre-season. If they show enough as a forward to warrant a place as a forward in the 1s in round one, select them. If they don't, keep them in the 2s to continue their development. If they still aren't getting it as a forward in the 2s, continue to try other things, like playing them down back.

BTW, I liked the determination shown by Griffith in the clip of this week's training. Hopefully it is how he will approach each contest this year. Then, if his time down back has shown him how forwards get to the right place at the right time, he may be finally able to play to his potential as a forward.

I guess I am the only one who wonders if Jack was sent to play defence as well like others have been would he be any better or would he have been delisted by now. Heck early days many were claiming Jack as a failure or third forward at best now he is the poster boy for forwards.

If players are recruited as a forward then that is where we should be looking at developing them not moving them all around trying to teach them different roles. Griffiths for example was recruited as a forward but before then when did he have to learn to be a forward by playing defence in the juniors?

Cheers, takes time to regain full confidence after shoulder problems, especially big blokes, TV an example of that.
Still have hopes that Griff will overcome his doubts & make it - massive bonus if he does.
Carey's one of the biggest examples. Took him a season to get full confidence back after a shoulder. Griff has a lot of upside and I'd love to see him make it. A Richmond with Griff, McBean and Elton could cause massive headaches for the rest of the competition.

What a loopy post.

Jack showed after two games at Coburg that he was AFL standard plus as a forward.

They took it easy with him and he played only a handful of games as a forward at AFL level that year.

In his VFL games he almost singlehandedly got Coburg into the grand final in his first year - yes that's right - got Coburg  into a grand final.

Your argument seems to rely on taking moronic comments of arm chair posters on here seriously who reckoned Jack couldn't play and then base your equally absurd argument on those earlier wacko comments.

BTW who was the loon coach who took Carey away from CHB and put him at CHF.

Junior forwards need to play forward and junior backs need to play back. Right?

PS Mick Martin, Geoff Southby and Scott Turner also say hello!

Lot of this debate is over development, roles and positions. Something we had no control over when players played for coburg.

I'll reserve judgement on player Develpment and positions until a few years have transpired under Richmond reserves.

Yep no excuses now. Ressies fwds should start off as beanie FF griff CHF and Elton third tall. Keep them there and promote the best performing one on merit. Those 3 should be pushing each other all year for a spot as third tall in the seniors. That's how they will improve as fwd talls

I wonder how many talls recruited as forwards end up being key backs ? I don't really know but I bet there are quite a few. I recall a post on this at one stage and the point was that talented KPPs tend to play as forwards at underage.

I agree with the post about Jack. He looked a class above at VFL level as a forward from day 1, consistently played good footy there. It took him a while to make the next step but it was clear that he was an AFL standard forward. Elton, Griffiths, Asbury as 3 examples have never consistently done what Jack did at VFL level. McBean has.

That's a very good point that McBean has performed consistently as a forward at VFL level whereas some of the others haven't. I think having our own VFL side will definitely help players like Griff, Elton and Astbury as we can do what we want with them for AFL side development and not concern ourselves with the fortunes of the VFL affiliate.

Leppitch was a good one. There's been a few over the time I reckon.

Looking forward to see Liam in the seniors some time in the new year. Has shown that despite his slight frame that he is a definite threat down forward. IMO he should be kept away from rucking duties - with Hampson and Maric he doesnt need to be rushed in that department.

John Worsfold. Eagles drafted him as a forward.

Peter Sumich went the other way. He was drafted as a backman.

they completely stiffed that up.

Loved the Derek Boyer Australia's strongest man video on the club site. I'm sure String was following him around like a lapdog.

McLiam McBean is spoken quite highly of in the interview with Champion Datas Glenn Luff.

Btw @LuffG0305 said off air he asked his staff to double check @liammcbean #aflprospectus2014 stats because they were so good for a tall

Even Phillips Adams believes in Beanie.

Interesting podcast and certainly confirmed what many have been observing over the past season.

Some of the more noteworthy observations-

- Liam McBean performed exceptionally well at ground level and is clearly in the elite category for a 202cm forward.
- Reece Conca has outperformed the vast majority of pick 6's in his third year and already has a healthy 80 point CD average (not including injury affected matches)
- Shaun Hampson has the second best tap to advantage stats in the league over the past two seasons, with only Sandilands ahead of him.
- Tigers have an exceptional draw and will be pressing hard for a top 4 spot
- Anthony Miles appears to be a very astute selection in the tradition of Moneyball (a reference that Champion Data cheekily like to avoid and replace with their own trademark)
- Lennon looks like another inspired Francis Jackson pick, continuing his outstanding record of first rounders.

Thanks Bully. I love this thread.

I found the Hampson comments most interesting, I suspect the club's use of champion data contributed to us targeting Hampson. Disappointing however that there was no analysis of Megan.

Also Luffy gave great wraps to our stats guy Hayden Hill who he said is one of the best in the business. He also gave great kudos to Francis and Blair. I was thinking while I was listening to this that we have assembled a great team. We seem now, to have very few weak links if any. I am excited for 2014 to say the least!
