Griffiths and Elton (and Post) were given ample opportunity up forward. They only got shunted back so that they might get a kick or improve other deficiencies.

This constant nauseating refrain that our development coaches are nongs is really tiresome.

Blokes that showed something tangible forward didn't get shunted back - ie Riewoldt and Vickery.

And our development of defenders Rance, Grimes and now Darrou is first class as is the general improved defensive work of players like Houli and Deledio.

The Coburg alignment probably didn't help because it is hard to justify playing Griff at full forward when Clifton or Carnell would do a better job.

This year I assume Griff and Elton will play key forwards in the twos come hell or high water and then most likely be flicked at year's end.

PS Beanie is a legend whom the development nongs in their dumbness have played forward all year. Go figure!

Yep, nailed it.

Ultimately the development nongs can only do so much & then it is up to the individual concerned to take his chance.

good post.
interesting that Jeremy Cameron, the best young tall forward in the game spent half a year down back in his first year at GWS (before they entered the AFL). didnt seem to do him any harm.

So wat happened with Shultz. He was no good as a fwd so we played him back so he could get a kick??? He's kicking a few goals now
Nearly all our talls in there early years get moved to the backs even ones who are naturally and clearly fwds.
Don't be surprised to see beanie in the backs next year.
Shultz post griffo elton even rance played fwd and then moved back. Too many to just be coincidence.
I'm in the camp of " play fwds int the fwd posis esp in the twos".

The Tiges moving Shultz into the backline obviously helped with his development. As you point out - he is kicking a few goals now; which he wasn't doing before he got to play down back for a while.

Its a pity that we didn't realise back then how well it was going to help Shultz's development to move him down back, otherwise we would have kept him. ;D

Good to see someone forlornly flying the sack everyone flag even after lamby's comprehensive truth bomb.

yes. The thing about Griffiths was ( and probably still is) that although he has all the tools as a key forward he doesn't seem to get to enough contests. I remember seeing him play many times in his first couple of years in Coburg's forward line and he was constantly running to the wrong places , leading to the wrong places etc. The move to the backline was partly imo to see how he went when he was taken to the ball rather than creating the play. That's his issue, he just doesn't get the ball enough or influence enough contests.

I posted 2-3 years ago that he should have watched how a guy like Brad Miller played when he was with us. Miller had 20% of Griffiths' ability but worked hard up and down the ground constantly creating options and getting to contests. Unless Griff can get that type of workrate he will get passed by and be gone at the end of 2014.

Agree, and will add that we only seemed to get our coburg structures right this year.

At various stages in 2012 we must have had the tallest VFL side in history, with Derickx, Browne, Elton, Griffiths, McGuane, Astbury and Miller rolling through the forward line. Combine this with a woefully undermanned midfield and our talls development was a disaster.

Many if these factors were beyond the coaches control and have thankfully been addressed.

Looking forward to a well balanced magoos at punt rd in 2014.

Is 90 pages a record for someone who hasn't played a game?
Lol yep. A lot of hype. Hopefully he gets a chance this year to show us his stuff I the ones. Would imagine then it will be hitting 190 pages.
Gotta hope, we do

Collins was close.

Not having played a game for RFC I think the Brad Miller rookie pick generated over 100 pages before he played a game

The first sentence is rubbish. Griffith has played 19 games and some of those in defence and Elton 1 hardly ample opportunity to show what they can do as a forward.

Don't have a problem with the rest of the post though.

They play defence because what they've shown as forwards is sh!thouse. They also barely play seniors because we aren't aiming to gift kids games anymore.

One is 22 and the other 20 maybe if they were played in position they can settle and show something but what will happen is they will be played forward here and there and in defence in between struggle for consistency in the position they were drafted as and have to be delisted.

You are conveniently forgetting that they also played forward in the 2s. Just like Jack did and just like TV did. Jack & TV both showed that they had what it takes to be a forward when playing in the 2s. They each got promoted to the 1s as forwards and showed that they have what it takes to be a forward in the AFL. So the club left Jack & TV as forwards. Jack & TV didn't need to be played down back, as part of their development, to get enough ball to be good AFL level forwards.

If other players, including Griffith's and Elton, don't show that they have what it takes to be a good forward in the 2's, the best thing for their development isn’t promoting them to the 1s (and dropping players who are doing better than them). They obviously need more development in the 2s to be AFL level players. If they aren't getting it when forward in the 2s, then try something else like playing them down back.

Elton seemed to be showing some promise in the second half of this season, so his development is heading in the right direction. However, not every player recruited by AFL clubs will make it. Let's hope that those 2 do, but they need to show more this pre-season. If they show enough as a forward to warrant a place as a forward in the 1s in round one, select them. If they don't, keep them in the 2s to continue their development. If they still aren't getting it as a forward in the 2s, continue to try other things, like playing them down back.

BTW, I liked the determination shown by Griffith in the clip of this week's training. Hopefully it is how he will approach each contest this year. Then, if his time down back has shown him how forwards get to the right place at the right time, he may be finally able to play to his potential as a forward.

yeah plenty!!

Cheers, takes time to regain full confidence after shoulder problems, especially big blokes, TV an example of that.
Still have hopes that Griff will overcome his doubts & make it - massive bonus if he does.
