I reckon Justin Plapp had quite a bit of hype about him when he ran around in the mcgoos.

Massive hype for the Plappster. So much expectation and anticipation. Can others remember the roar and standing ovation when he finally ran onto the ground in his first game? I can still picture it. It was deafening in the red seat area.

Richard TamBLING

when he kicked that NAB cup goal in his first season (grey jumpers) I think everyone thought it was the 2nd coming. Unfortunately it was one of his career highlights.

Yes, big wraps on him in 97(?). I seem to remember after Plapp left that Gieschen saying how he was constantly being told how good this Plapp was in the two's and how he (Gieschen) had a view of him and thought he was nothing special and wondered what the hype was about.

Relton Roberts, Clayton Collard, Troy Taylor and that kid who kept taking mark of the year at Coburg and kicked about 5 goals in his only game against the Dogs.

Marty McGrath, we could certainly do with another like him (assuming he plays more than 1 good game)

Marty McGrath. I remember telling my mate who is a dogs fan to keep an eye out for this kid, and he kicked 5 on debut then went off the rails entirely.

Plapp was some sort of cult figure before he even played a game at senior level. His first two games were fantastic, but highlight reel moments were few and far between after that. Alan Jeans gave Brad Gwillem a big wrap, something about being the best player outside the AFL when he brought him over, but unfortunately his career was almost over before it began after a collision with a goal post, I think that was in Adelaide.

Who was better - Plapp or the birdman?
It's a near run thing. Plapp probably takes the chocolates. I think he played more games and he did play a few at St Kilda after he left Richmond. Was it the Birdman who kicked a mammoth goal against the Bombers just before half time? I think he also took Barry Hall out when Hall tried to crunch him at Waverley one day, too.

Loved the Birdman. He couldn't play much but I still loved him.

Manic, gave his absolute best.

Not sure he was ever on the rails, first game he got named he forgot to bring his footy boots!

I can still remember the two marks Marty McGrath took in the VFL finals series. On the second mark, i remember the commentator saying "i don't think i've ever seen a player get that high" to which the fellow commentator said " he took a higher one last week"!

I'm missed the first mark until it was replayed during the morning of the AFL Grand Final.

Also remember him kicking a torpedo goal from 60 out against the Essendon Reserves. He picked it up from the middle of a pack and banged it from a standing start. Commentator made the comment that it defied physics.

I also remember Greg Miller's comments after McGrath's 5 goals on debut, saying he got lucky with most of them falling in his lap. I thought to myself they don't fall in your lap if you don't get to the right spots.

After the first game we basically played him in short stints from the bench and then dropped him. I wonder how this guy would have turned out with better development.

I know its easy to say fter the event but I said to my son aftter he kicked those 5 goals ( and Miller was right, there was a lot of Gavin Excell in those goals) that McGrath would be gone by end of the next season. One of the rare times I was right.....
