Have to be the worst contested mark of any of the absoulute champion key forwards in the history of the game.
There was another forward who averaged about 6 goals a game but couldn't take a mark over his head, was slow and had no left foot.... Peter Hudson

Franklin has Hudson covered as an overhead mark

On McBean, I thought he was ok yesterday but he looked slow at times to me. I am not sure if he is slow or he just hasn't picked up the speed of the game yet.

Well before my time Sin, I think most of the footage I've seen he was chained to a goal post ;)

Hardly the best way to develop a youngster, sitting him on the bench? Winning games now is not the best thing for the football club, developing youngsters is.
What do you think this magic word 'developing' means? Sticking a bloke on the field and leaving him there? I suppose if we'd lost but Beanie played 95% game time you'd be lauding Hardwick for his player development? Winning is good for Castagna, Markov, Short and co. It's good for prospective recruits to see us win. Maybe it's good development for a player in his fourth game to play 65% of the game, especially when he can't run it out.

Yeah we talked about it at the game today, especially Vickery being benched when he was on fire one game.

Hardwick really has a tin ear. Our rotations forward and midfield rarely make any sense.
There was a worse one with Griff a few weeks after the Ty one. Might have been the Gold Coast game. Had a good start, then spent the last 10 minutes of the first and the first eight minutes of the second on the bench.

As much as I am a traditional fan of the three tall forwards model, if one of them can't run (Beanie, Ty) you're hamstrung in the modern game. Forwards have to be able to get up and back, up and back, time after time, all day long. Beanie can't do it all game. Yet. Hopefully, he will. I'm a fan, and I thought he was ok yesterday.

Liam needs to do two things -

Get a lot fitter and a lot stronger through his core.

It will help him so much holding his ground in contests, with second efforts and keeping his feet.

He has all the rest.

We also forget he is still just a pup. 21 years old.

Its up to him but he has time to get those two things up to the mark.

Only now at 25 Griff have them.

Thought his game yesterday was ok and he showed a little..

My concern is after 4 years with RFC his running & size don't appear to have improved significantly, been whispers he doesn't want it bad enough.

Really needs to show something as ToO pointed out he's out of contract and should he want another he needs to start showing something immediately.

Yep, running and strength. He runs out of puff and he ain't strong enough. Hopefully this taste shows him this and he works harder than the word is he currently does.

Nah he's comfortably shown and done enough to warrant another contact TT.

Especially in comparison to Todd Elton who got another.

He's had 3 years to develop his core.
Either he's lazy or the development at the club has failed him

Another McBean furphy... "He hasn't put on any size since he's been at the club"

Of course he's still got work to do, but people forget just how skinny a kid he was when we drafted him. He is significantly larger, heavier and stronger now. Bear in mind that he came into his height much later than similar sized players, and his development has actually been tracking reasonably well.

But don't take my word for it - fire up Google, search for Liam McBean images, and see for yourself.

I recall at the start of the season he mentioned he has put on 7kgs but still has work to go, am i recalling correctly? If so 7kgs in 4 years is not sufficient as i agree the man was a toothpick!

I think most makes are larger at 21 than they were at 18. That's fairly biological. But to the naked eye Liam still looks on the "skinny" side. Not saying he has to look like Rene Kink or Mick Conlon just a bit more defined.

Williams had to strap bricks to his feet so he wouldn't blow away during training runs.

Yep. Development in body and game time. Rewatched the game and I thought Beanie did better than first viewing.

Really didn't get outmarked, brought the ball down to ground , very nice taps to Jack and Lloyd which led to Grigg and Rioli scores.

To be generous to Hardwick reduced game time does allow Liam to run harder and to his credit he outworked his opponent 5 or 6 times to get the outlet mark on wing and half back.

Be nice if Hardwick game him some more time at the pointy end of the ground to see if he can impact the scoreboard in a big way.

When Richmond lined up against North in Hobart every single North player looked to have more muscle than his Richmond opponent, McBean isn't the only lightweight at a club that looks weaker than all the top sides.

Interesting observation.
In comparison... A recent interview with Jakovich of WC with Mike. One thing that struck me was when he said they were all pumping weight almost 30% more than any other club at the time. He scoffed when acknowledging the rumours about possible steroids but said it was all natural and all made the commitment. Many did even more weights in their private time. They became super competive and got into GF and won.
I suppose it gets back to the clear direction of the football department and development again. Are they doing the right thing?

I think we will acknowledge before the end of the season that Liam is not afl standard as he is not competitive enough

5.2 today.

Will get time and space at the G.

He'll be very effective i reckon.

Of course when he failed to acheive this bizarre prediction it was all Dimma's fault.

Astute posting.
