Liam McBean

Beanie fumbled the ball, I dunno, a half dozen times(?) during the game. His strength is the surety of his hands (at ground level). That can only be nerves. Had he taken the ball cleanly as he usually does and used it smartly we'd be having a different conversation about his game now.

The other thing. He has to bring the ball to ground. It's one thing to spill the mark and another altogether to let it carry you. That is aerial insignificance. It will get a bloke dropped.

I can only remember two ruck contests. Both against Redpath (leper, but an AFL class leper). In the first Beanie used his body to screen Redpath out, tapped the ball from body height to advantage. This is his stock ruck win but it was a clear win. In the second with a minimum of effort he was able to rag doll the suddenly flimsy Redpath. Free against. Sucker play. He was ok in his limited ruck exposure. 21 is young to ruck.

The biggie. We don't have to focus on other aspects of a player's performance if he kicks the *smile* goal. That was point-blank range. McBean is playing for his career. If you hit the post it's a behind. Kick the *smile* goal. Two goals and he's a lock for the next week.

Hardwick was right to reassure Beanie in the presser. Beanie looked nervous and will profit from the experience. We get at least two more weeks to see how well he does.

Still think that those figures presented are entirely useless.

The figures illustrate that not many blitz their first few games. A great debut here and there, but not over the first few.

Was slightly disappointing.

Needs to get fitter, but this taste will give him the carrot he needs to do that work.

He does play smart though and helped make our forward line more cohesive.

The Dogs at Etihad are as tough a defence as he'll play this year as well. Will find more space to leadup at the ball against other teams.

He was quiet. Thought the pace of the game got him. Was caught in between the lines on many occasions. Will adjust.

The pace of the game was vastly different to what he's used to.
Sorry Baron, that's just a completely lame excuse for another ordinary performance at AFL level. George seemed to manage o.k. in just his third high paced AFL game. Oleg even excelled in just his first AFL game.

Doesn't matter what age he is, it was his third AFL game.
Makes a big difference when you are comparing the performance of skinny 18y.o. players just stepping out of kiddies footy, against those of a 21 y.o. who's into his fourth year of adult footy.

The fact it was only his third in four years is on Hardwick, not Liam.
Moreso on Liam than Dimma.
Only Liam n Elton have failed to make any impression and remain on the list over the last five years. Coach n club keep working with these two hoping they'll show some signs of adavancement yet they have plateaued as competent reserve grade players.
Third time around Liam has had an opportunity to perform to some reasonable degree at seniors n third time he's given pretty close to Sweet F.A.while others far younger n less experienced can manage to have input to the game.
Been a lot of work put into Ty n he's stumbling at the moment, his worst is similar to Beanies best so far at AFL level. Ty's best is far superior.
Been a lot of work put into Griff n he's still teasing to some degree. His role is now well different from just being a forward, he's back up ruck. He plays mobile tall marking link up option between the fifties and he wanders down forward to create an extra mismatch option. He's not really effecting Liam's chances.

He's got another couple of weeks on offer from the coaches, time for Liam to put his proverbials squarely on the line n show everybody he's got something to offer.
McJesus he definitely ain't, I'll settle for one of Dimma's disciples, but I'm more hopeful than believer.

Some perspetive............

First 3 games: kicks , marks , hb , Goals

Vickery 7k 16h 8m 1g
McBean 12k 10h 7m 1g
Riewoldt 12k 9h 12m 3g
Griffiths 4k 8h 3m 1g

Franklin 2ok 8m 9h 4g
Roughead 10k 7m 13h 3g

Unlike McBean, all the other names here debut prior to 2011 when the sub rule was introduced, and in most cases had their 3 games consecutively.

Interesting.
Be even more interesting to compare Bean to Daniher who we play next week.
I think they were both drafted in same year.
Daniher was gifted games and is just getting some consistency.
Confidence is high, taking mark of the year last week won't hurt either.

It was interesting listening to the radio yesterday and someone was bagging Freo for their development of Matt Taberner and that he shouldn't be seen as a developing KPP but he should be a developed KPP already.

Exactly right. That was McBean's first full game of AFL ever. Kicked a goal, should have been 2. Contested grab, couple of tackles, a lot of fumbles. Playing one of the top teams in the league. He will only get better.

If anything, the game seemed to prove that RFC were right to hold him back in the VFL until he improved upon what they called AFL-level attributes.

If he felt hard done by previously, that was the game where he might have learnt the RFC weren't making stuff up.

McBean needed to make more contests, compete harder, run faster, have more urgency.

I still think McBean should have been playing AFL earlier, but I also don't think it was a disaster that he hadn't.

I think people were hoping we'd be having the same reaction to McJesus's game as we did about Logo's. But he's got at least 2 more games to cement his position in front of Princess Plasma

Definitely looked a bit rushed. He won't get near as much time at ground level as he does in the VFL and dare I say it at times he looked very slow when the ball hit the deck.
Has time but will have to adjust to the pace pretty quickly.

BTW one goal is one goal. Missing a shot from 30 out is just bad footy.

I thought he was ok.

Just needs to keep getting games and pump some iron in the off season.

Liked the quick pick up and handball. Didn't like the one-handed marking attempt.

Maybe compare their weight in the 1st year. Beano's obviously behind because he's too skinny.

Unless he offers less than Vickery. Keep him in. All we're going to do is learn whether or not he's gonna make it.

We already know Vickery isn't worth keeping. So there's no point playing him if we can learn where Liam's at.

He did look slow- but he has enough smarts to make up for it.

Doesn't prove that all. I'm not sure some understand the difficulty in getting used to a different level of speed and intensity, and this game was hotter than a lot of the Tiger games this year. You have to experience it to adjust over time.

spot on Evo, thats what I see nearly every VFL game, either a 1 handed attempt or 2 handed but looking straight down at his boots, he did it last week against Casey right in front of the JD stand

Lamby always argues it's easier to kick goals in the seniors. ;D

i didnt notice watching the game, but can someone tell me if he had the 196cm/90cm Roberts (who looked skinnier than McBean), the 190cm Morris or the 186cm Easton Wood on him?

some talk up his contested marking but it was disappointing he couldnt take a few more marks when he was the tallest player on the field.

hopefully he can improve over the next few weeks.

He lacks speed and fitness at this stage to compete properly at the level.

Keep playing him, reckon he will find a place with his smarts.
