I don't remember where but I saw somewhere that he's sitting at 92kg now. That would match the 6kg gain you've heard but the starting base was 86.

I would be very surprised if he was 92kg, he still looks very scrawny in the upper body. Judging by Elton's growth, I reckon 92 would be a reasonable target next year.

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

Haven't seen the kid play, but his reputation will sky high once he appears for his first senior game.

Lets hope he fills expectations of the supporter group otherwise the thread might have to read DUD DELIST!!

cant be any skinnier that westoff's 1st season at PA.

The Westoff comparison is an interesting one.

I'd be keen to know how the boy went, not in terms of pure impact, but injury also.

First season was in 2007, here are his stats - http://www.footywire.com/afl/footy/pg-port-adelaide-power--justin-westhoff?year=2007

Looks to me like he debuted in Round 10 and didn't miss a game for the remainder of the year. Can't seem to find his draft weight anywhere but his dimensions are very similar to McBean's.

Thanks Skip.

As you say played every game after debut, and Port had a decent season with a good win/loss.

Kicked a couple of bags of 4 and never topped 14 disposals.

If the McBean farce was a court case, Westhoff would be Exhibit A.

Westoff was 20, turning 21 in 2007.

Agree he looks very skinny. Probably the only thing that would prevent him from being elevated this year. he certainlyappears to have the capabilities.

I would say his aerobic capacity would need to improve, he's no slug but he'll still need to lift his workrate at fair bit.

Could probably say that for most 18yo 200cm giants.

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

definitely 92kg, coz he is so tall and skinny it will take a lot of kilo's before you start to notice a difference

That's precisely why we shouldn't be rushing him, we constantly harp on about poor development with talls yet we're also so eager to promote a skinny teenager who's played four games of VFL. Give him some time, talls take longer, we all know that. Correct me if I'm wrong, but has McBean even been listed in the best players yet? If not, let him work for his jumper, potential is one thing but it's only half the battle. Gifting games serves very little purpose aside from encouraging complacency.

I agree.

We must aim for the Geelong model. Rarely do they promote their draftees without a thorough apprenticeship in the 2nds.

They get the benefit of not only developing in a level above tac, but they give it their all when they are selected for a senior game in the knowledge that these opportunities are rare.

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

Don't discount the fact that Geelong have had the ability to field their own VFL side as well which is obviously a massive plus for development, something we will reap the rewards out of from next year onwards.

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

In 5 years time, when he's a star of the game he'll be all like :

"Bean there, done that"

Of course we shouldn't rush him in. Would be nice if he's progressed enough to get maybe a taste at AFL towards the end of the season. But at 18yo there's plenty of time.

He needs to see Brynne Edelstons surgeon to get some chest implants.
