In your list of rucks you have forgotten Derickx.
The ruckman we took in 2010 rather than Giles and kept last year in place of recruiting Hannath.

Don't remind me, X-man will surely be X-terminated by season's end.

The hype is reminding me of the Griffiths thread.

At least Bean has been doing very well at Coburg. Griffiths hype has always been based off draft pick hope and athletic ability rather then performance.

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

I hope i'm not over selling McCafe here, but I think he might just be the best player I have seen ................with the name McBean anyway..

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

That second goal he kicked on the weekend demonstrated extraordinary agility. More like a goal you would expect Stephen Milne to kick, not someone that's over 200cm.

Early days but very promising.

If true, this is pleasing on one hand, but concerning with regards to our ruck stocks. It basically means we have to get another junior ruck with the next batch of draftees. As it stands now, we have Maric who looks as though he's about to break down, Vickery who is better suited to the forward line, and Stephenson who's the wrong side of 30. Any more dilly dallying with our dwindling ruck stocks spells huge trouble in the forseeable future.

Just a few observations with McBean, in the u/18's his lack of physicality was a major concern. His marking ability was good without being a standout feature, but contested marking was largely absent from his game. If he's to become a viable third tall or even leading forward, I would expect that this facet of his game will need to lift a couple of notches. It's on this point that I see Elton having a slight advantage.

Now for a little bit of perspective folks. So far McBean has been compared to Franklin, Cox, Salmon and even Royce Hart. He's been labelled the best player from the 2012 draft and is apparently already better than Daniher after half a dozen games of VFL football. Call me overly sceptical with regards to some of these claims, but the McBean that I have seen at u/18's level had a lot of developing to do and was yet to establish himself in any given position. He basically played as a midfielder who just happened to be 203cm.

I can certainly understand why people are bedazzled by such a beanpole being highly skilled, but the truth remains that players of his height rarely make the grade unless it's as a ruckman. It's for this reason that I'd lower the expectations a little, the signs are obviously promising but there's a long road ahead of him just in terms of getting his body AFL ready. A dozen goals in 4 games of VFL football is a good start, hopefully he can maintain that or even increase his output over the next 6 months. The big challenge for Liam, and this extends back to his junior performances, will be to produce more than a dozen possessions and a handful of goals. At present he's not even taking the best defender at VFL level. Personally, I would like him to take a game by the scruff of the neck and truly dominate, particularly if the forwardline is to become his permanent home. Hopefully it happens this year, if not he's still got plenty of time, but for the love of god, let's not burden him with the messiah complex after 4 games of reserves grade football.

Well for a start howzabout ignoring his form from under age and take his current form on face value as an 18yo competing in seniors at vfl ::)....

I am, pleasing progress no doubt but it's a bit early to be labelling him the best player in the draft, wouldn't you think? He's got a healthy 3 goal average, about a dozen possessions a game and has shown a clean pair of heels. So far so good, but bear in mind he's played 4 games, and is yet to play on any quality AFL defenders.

Do I think he's ready for senior football? Not yet, still a long way to go both physically and with his match day consistency. I'm sure that will come in time but one needs to be careful about buliding him up to be a superstar before he's even played a game. Hype can be a double edged sword, especially around these parts.

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

we should play the mcbean bag against melbourne.

stop the farce

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

I reckon we have finally jagged one here. Definitely needed it to make up for Griffiths and Post dud kp early picks. Reason he dropped was due to lookin a little timid at U18 level and thin build. No signs of timid at VFL level and will add muscle over next few years. An impossible matchup given his ground skills, speed and marking. Jack, McBean and a fiery Vickery is a knightmare for opposition defences. Just need a Yarran & Betts type to have a GF quality look about it

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

McBean has improved each week of the VFL season according to Clark. I dunno I haven't seen.

It could be that he has a goal to play AFL. It could be that the panel has given him some benchmarks.

Given that he'll probably play HFF if he gets a gig this year I imagine that the next hoop he'll have to jump through is tackling. If he kicks three and lays five tackles three weeks in a row he will get a gig in Capital City.

If he gets numbers running the other way nobody will deny him.

Next off-season he has to beat Brandon round the tan. That would be scary.

BTW if he's a champion tall he has to get a regular game next year. They all do second year.

Its a truth. we need a betts/garlett/hill/neade. It not so much an elephant, as a warthog, in the room. we need a fast, little, mercurial, well-adjusted young indigenous man to kick breathtaking goals on average 3 times a game.

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

against melbourne we should start with Elton at CHB and Mcbean at FF

B: Morris Chaplin Grimes
H: Deledio Elton Rance
C: Ellis Conca Vlastuin
H: Knights Jack Martin
F: King Vickery Mcbean
R: Maric Cotchin Foley

I: Edwards

Jack, there is no way in hell McBean-caught-stealin' will get a call up to seniors this year...he would be physically smashed.

Yep he's shown PLENTY for the burgers thus far but he will need to add at least 15 kegs to that praying mantis frame to even contemplate competing with the big boys.

Currently, if he turned sideways to you he would dissappear...ala "Dynamo".

DYNAMO McBEAN!

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

Ive been pleasantly surprised with his contested marking ability with Coburg, I didnt think he had that in his game, but all the games Ive seen he has taken a few.

Would like to see him take the ruck contests inside 50 just to get a taste of it

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

Beanie is a project player and ordinarily we wouldn't see him this year.

Furthermore any talk of playing a key forward or ruck role is premature until he puts on quite a few more kgs. He is listed at 86 kg but there is some chatter of him having put on 6 kg (might have been 80kg at draft time)

However if he keeps displaying top form at Coburg, he might be up for a role O'Hanlon played last year as a mobile marking high half forward.

Will be interesting to see how he develops this year.

Yep I reckon once he does finally get put in the centre square his tap work could be impressive too. Seems a superb reader of the ball.

FWIW I don't think he'll debut this season, but will be fast tracked over summer to play more games than expected in 2014.

I don't remember where but I saw somewhere that he's sitting at 92kg now. That would match the 6kg gain you've heard but the starting base was 86.
