Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

Big Mac was at Club 80 last December and acknowledged he needed to put on size and become more physical. He seemed to have a realistic outlook on the road ahead.

Roachy and Knighter are another 2 that spring to mind. In all my years of posting on PRE, talking about the Tiges recruits, I've seen a lot of qualified hype. But I've never read or heard such an emphatic early call as this. The last time I heard of one, it was before I was born, was when my uncle met Ray Jordan on Swan St, (he knew him obviously) and Slug said to Uncle Vince, 'We have got a bloody ripper here, Premiers here we come' after Royce had played a thirds game I think.

Also, knowing Carter is not generally one for overstatement, I'm excited.

I hate hype machines. I'm trying to look at this logically and empirically.

Is mcbean a 202cm (and growing) kid with sticky hands? Check.

Is mcbean a 202cm (and growing) kid with a hunger to get dirty? Check.

Is mcbean a 202cm (and growing) kid who's shown he can dance like Fred astaire? Check.

Is mcbean a 202cm (and growing) kid who's shown elite kicking accuracy? Check.

Is mcbean a 202cm (and growing) kid who wants to support, inspire and lift his team mates? Check.

These are eternal attributes : displayed once, you know they can be replicated. The only thing that will prevent these attributes being replicated on a frequent basis is physical injury.

The fact he checked all these boxes in his first game representing the RFC list is the stuff of dreams for coaches and recruiters.

SO. MUCH. POSITIVITY.

:rubhead

Geez folks, settle down for Gawds sake.
Comparisons to two team of the Century stars in Hart and Rioli is a bit over the top after his first VFL match.
BTW Carter it was actually his first game representing COBURG not the RFC. :pop

I like that checklist. He's down as 203, though? Not that it matters. HIs mobility amazed me on his highlight video. Fair dinkum, the only plus 200 player I've ever seen move anywhere near that agile is Nicknat. And I reckon Beanie is more agile than him. Also reminiscint of a teenage Paul Salmon (205) who was super agile for his size, and also disappeared when he turned sideways, but Beanie looks more agile than him as well.

Love the optimism, just curious to know why he wasn't listed in the best players?

He didn't do enough to be listed in the best.

He kicked 4 nice goals, a couple came from solid marks, one came a excellent one-on-one ground contest which he won easily. He demonstrated good mobility and ball-handling and showed that he wasn't going to shirk contests. He didn't look overawed at any stage.

Of the five new boys, McBean and Vlastuin both looked up for the fight, McDonough and Williams battled hard but looked tentative and will need to build their confidence, McIntosh looked overawed. What I found really promising is that all five looked like they could win the ball and use it well.

I was gob-smacked, really.

Not enough to put him in the best but a sparkling debut nonetheless.

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

why wait. In mcBean, Out Vickery.

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

Ah, bully, you know that sometimes it's all about demonstrated abilities.

Beano has established a high ceiling on a heap of skillsets.

sounds like he has more to offer than griffo already

Sadly that looks to be the case. Griff was very vocal yesterday though and is still just 20yo so we'll see I guess. Griff did kick a magnificent goal running in from the centre square. I think that's what many Tiges supporters are hoping to see plenty of in the future.

Poor bugger.
Played well in his first VFL match and now he's on a reaaaaallllly high pedestal.
Poor bugger can only go down from here.

I'm not so sure Redan. Reckon he'll take it on and keep improving. He showed leadership in his approach.

Fair enough, fingers crossed he builds from here.

Another burning question, how did he travel in rucking contests or do you see him primarily as a mobile forward?

From memory O and Bo shared the ruck.

I actually agree that he needs years and 20kg to be reach maturity as potential ruck.

But as a forward flanker - a roamer with the same running patterns as *cough* buddy - I say why not sooner rather than later?

He's potentially a great foil for Jack and Rone - think of the variety offered there.

Let's not be rash - 2013 may well be out of the question. But with another pre-season and his already burgeoning skills why not 2014?

Agree with much of this.

The risk one takes playing an undeveloped tall is that of injury that can have long term consequences.

It always helps when players have strong muscle behind their frames.

yep that's the risk Phantom. I hope the stalk is rubbery.

Again you can make a comparison with Salmon. Started as an unstoppable agile teenage beanpole, 60 odd goals in half a season then he did his knee. Came back and slowly went from FWD>FWD/ruck>Ruck/FWD> ruck, over the course of his long career, as he slowly went from beanpole to gorilla.

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

a pretty valid comparison on the bare bones we've seen so far.

i reckon heinz is even more agile, a scary prospect.

Who is Heinz?

Also on the Salmon comparison, he played back when backmen stood on your toes, punched your kidneys, and tried to break your hands/ arms, head, with punches in marking contests. tried to land on you,etc etc. Also only 1 central ump. Beanie wouldn't have to worry about any of that crap.
