Liam McBean

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

McGlobeTrotterBean was fantastic today. Not as skinny as I thought but still has to put on weight. He looks to have a good enough body shape to do this within a couple of years. If he is currently 93kg then he must be very tall, he needs 10-15kgs still. At least.

He played confident and looked like he belonged. A bit like Dylan Grimes. Showed good technique with his kicking and marked very well.

Grundy might be ahead with natural size but development-wise on today's performance McBean looks to be another very smart selection by our recruiters, 1st pick: Midfielder 2nd pick: Future Ruckman/forward.

There was quite a bit of cohesiveness between players at the game today and a fair few senior players and coaches there to look on as well.

Good to watch :)

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

Sounds from all reports that McBean showed exactly the attributes that he demonstrated in his highlights package on drafting.
In those he showed great grounds skills and a very good ability to create an overlap/loose man as a tall defender.

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

Loving the MCBean hype. I reckon people are too anguished about his weight though. Its perfectly natural for a kid his age and height to be that skinny. Paul Salmon anyone? Also I reckon the way the game is going tall slim athletic players could fit right in, ie. baketballers.

I don't think Dustin Fletcher was a heavy weight for his height either

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

What surprised me Redan , was that I was expecting a timid tall who relied more on bruise free footy because of his (lack of) size), Instead he looked like a marking tall. He kicked our first after a solid mark and I was trying to work out who he was, hmmm not Elton, not Derrickx, maybe a coburg ringin.....uuuhhh Mcbean....interesting....and he only got better from there.

I was actually impressed by a couple of ground contests along the boundary line which ended up in draws. His ability at his size to get to the ball and think his way through the contested ball really surprised me.

The caveat with Liam is that Sandringham probably did not have much quality size, so we will wait till he plays on a VFL bruiser but for now good signs.

Another little fascination was watching Spencer White play for Sandy , an absolute Buddy clone but not as tall and can actually clunk a mark. Thought he beat Mcintosh on the day but was (of course ) wasteful.

BTW have we confirmed no 33 was Dennis Lane. That guy is a cat at AFL level but no 33 kept Sandy in the game all day.

This was my great fear when we drafted him, will he be just another bruise free tall utility in the mould of Dean Putt? As we all know, talent alone will not be enough if you're as timid as a mouse. It's refreshing to hear that Liam 'The Stalker' McBean isn't likely to take a backward step, I hope he makes it, we desperately need another tall to take the next step.

Sounds good. What sounds better is we see a performance like that and don't feel the need to rush Jelly into the seniors.

Haha My user name on You tube is Jellybean Tiger.
I've had it for 6 years.

Spooky.

Re: mcbean -- birth of a legend

First thing I noticed is he had a thirst for the contest.

Just cant teach that.

Combine that basic instinct with his finer skills, we definitely have a player.

This is why the Richmond football club is quietly excited and the rest of the football world can get stuffed.

Haven't seen a debut (for tiggers or burgers) as filled with delicious small moments for quite some time.

These are the things you look for when you settle on the terraces at mantello oval.

Poor bugger.
Played well in his first VFL match and now he's on a reaaaaallllly high pedestal.
Poor bugger can only go down from here.

Nor did Maurice.

Roachy and Knighter are another 2 that spring to mind. In all my years of posting on PRE, talking about the Tiges recruits, I've seen a lot of qualified hype. But I've never read or heard such an emphatic early call as this. The last time I heard of one, it was before I was born, was when my uncle met Ray Jordan on Swan St, (he knew him obviously) and Slug said to Uncle Vince, 'We have got a bloody ripper here, Premiers here we come' after Royce had played a thirds game I think.

Also, knowing Carter is not generally one for overstatement, I'm excited.
