Kane McAuliffe

The inability of our young players to impact games in any meaningful way is really worrying.

Literally every other club manages to get far more out of their kids regardless of where they drafted them than we do.
Yep. This is our really big worry. So much vanilla. Where are the confident new extraverts with swagger? Bland.

McAuliffe is the standout best of the lot. not worried at all about him making the grade. But who else?

Depending which kids your talking about and how long they have been in the system. Don't expect a McAuliffe to run out 4 qtrs in his first year of footy let's be realistic.

Agreed, but this is the problem of not blooding kids when you are strong.
We didn’t & know find out the cupboard is nearly bare.

I reckon he is one of the bright lights of having to play so many cubs this season. A couple of other also have potential although one (Campbell) is now looking tired and needs a rest but in his few outings, young Kane has shown he has a footballing brain and skill levels to match. A good preseason, a fitness programme and we could have something special

I don’t get this kids get tired bs. They’re bloody young and should run all day regardless. Lift Kane.

the memory is a little scratchy but back in Cotch's first season the debate was going around what output/game impact should a budding star in their first year have
and someone dug up stats on Judd, Ablett Jnr , etc and it was around 14 disposals per game , and naturally they all built on that

13 disposals , 3 tackles against a side who are up and about in front of their home crowd , I'll take that and cross my fingers he follows that sort of path

McAuliffe is good. Looking like a draft bargain so far.

With the next crop of players we bring in, we should be prioritising these types with skill and some footy-IQ. The club clearly hasn’t moved on from its 2017 way of thinking.

We just need about 5-6 more of him in the squad and we’ll be set!

He went pick 40 or thereabouts
Obviously has things to work. Endurance being one but looks an absolute bargain at that pick

This is the correct take. Our midfield at full strength isn't elite to begin with. Constantly move the peices each week and it really isolates the kids.

How's Mac2 meant to play a defined role with different senior players lining up each week in the middle. Chuck him into Carlton or Geelong and we wouldn't be questioning it IMO.

Not to mention Cotchin really had to change his game up after...4 seasons maybe? To begin impacting games. He got heavily criticised for getting cheap stats and not being hard enough.

The point is players grow into champions, it's rare a Reid or Martin is born, give Mac2 a chance to grow.

Big difference being Cotchin would always find plenty of the ball in his early days, even if they were “cheap” possessions. Little evidence so far to suggest McAullife is as prolific.

Our best player at the moment is arguably Shai. In his first two years he played 8 games total and averaged just 9 possessions. We are asking these newbies to perform the same as 100 game players in their first or second season. This rarely happens. Have some patience.

Some have gone off too early with MacAuliffe. Got a long long way to go like many kids not in the top end of the draft.

Yeah he's a bit like dating the hottest girl in north-west tassie Harold.

you think she's a 9/10. But when you move to the mainland you realise she was only a 6.

He's over hyped a bit because he's the best of an average lot.

I think he is currently a little bit out of his depth. Lots of good signs to suggest he is a keeper . After this week if he again struggles it should be time for a stint in the two's to find some ball and touch.

The games he has had is what is needed. He has had a taste and he knows where he has to get to to succeed.
Tough gig first year 19yo being asked to play inside. Yep he is a real good size for the role but he still has plenty of work to do on his conditioning and strength.

Actually thats complete rubbish. Look back at Cotchs 2008 season (his 1st season). He averaged 16.4 disposals (the sub rule didn't exist then so managed to play all the games). His games ranged from 11 to 25 (had over 20 twice, both were 25 disposals) in 15 games (15 consecutively).

McAuliife if you exclude the sub games has 12, 20, 16, 16, 9 and 13 in 6 games for an average of 14.3 (not far off Cotchs 16.4 in season 1, though Cotchs season was broken up as much as McAuliffe has had with the sub role and he also hasn't had a settled midfield to play around.

Reckon it's a myth (even Richmond supporters seem to roll it out) about Chimps cheap possessions.

From game 1 he was the hardest player at the ball in the team.

He went through a small patch through 2016 where he would get the "run around" kick - But other than that earnt his possessions more than any other player at Richmond, and possibly the league.

For proof - Have a look at this contested possessions ratio here:

Chimp getting cheapies is a Lie. A myth!!!!!

He got more uncontested than contested 10 years out of 16.
But really who cares what other people think or believe? He’s a triple premiership captain who led his team by example.
We and his teammates know his worth. All the others can gagf.

Yep. Cotch win the Brownlow in 2012 because he was the best player in the game. From 2013-2015 he led us to finals because he was close to the best player in the game.
In 2016 he, along with the rest of the team, got a bit sidetracked. Then in 2017 he returned to his status as one of the best players in the game.
