Re: Welcome to Tigerland - Josh Caddy

At the moment cause we are winning he has escaped the radar. But if he was brought over to play in the midfield with stints forward I have yet to see it. I just don't think he has the pace or ball winning ability to play midfield. Hopefully he can prove me wrong

Think his career stats have proven that he can play midfield, its all about balance, we are seriously underdone for size in FL so he stays in, when Griff returns will Lennon remain or will they push Caddy more to Mid?..

All these panic merchants about certain players does ya head in, were winning and as a unit playing well, its the structure of the team that provides that balance and platform.

Not every player every week is going to be 'killing it' every single week......

Have one bad game (not talking Caddy) and the Pre selection committee are ready for discussion, disection and then castration.. ridiculous that 3 games in both Caddy and Prestia are shaping as whipping boys

Some good points there.

That shepherd in the goal square where jack marked was first class almost match winning.

You're right, he's being played more as a fwd. And to think about it in another context, while not an exact like for like comparison, he is offering more than Vickery at present (whom he has essentially replaced in the fwd line).

Well I disagree.

I question his role. If we needed a forward why not recruit a forward? If we wanted a mid why isn't he playing mid? He's quickly being either set up to fail ( not intentionally) or we,ve recruited the wrong guy. Or he's just not as good as we may have thought?

You don't go and throw pick 26 and $400k on a bit part forward... do you?

And just because we,ve won 3 on the trot doesn't mean you don't look for areas to improve either.

But yes there's time for this to be turned around.

Here we go, an interesting article on Caddy from January this year:

Never disputed that (its a good article one i had read previously), what i had said is balance, a player needs to play to where they give the team structure and balance, at this stage we need him forward, i have no doubt throughout the long 2017 season he will play a lot of mid field minutes.

I agree as other have said if he is a pure forward there are better out there, he is extremely versatile and can play both positions and give others a chop out, valuable in balance and structure.

Caddy is being used as the stay at home forward switching with Martin.

Re: Welcome to Tigerland - Josh Caddy

It's a long year.

Caddy is there for midfield depth as much as anything else. For years, we've been screaming out for real depth. Midfielders who have a right to best 22, who are only out of the midfield because A-grade quality is keeping them there.

Caddy is a B-grade midfielder. And a B-grade forward. And critical when we start to get hit with injuries or suspension through the year.

At the moment, he's playing mainly forward because our forward stocks are thin. He can't play mainly mid - even miles can't get a game there atm.

When the year gets rough, it will be good to be able to slot a solid big body into the midfield, who's had time there throughout the year.

Re: Welcome to Tigerland - Josh Caddy

Caddy will be good the second half of the year when others are tyring in the wintry conditions.

I agree on the pace, but he can win the ball and impact at the contest. 2 years ago before Danger came in he played for Geelong as an inside mid and averaged over 5 clearances and over 10 contested possessions.

If you compare that to our current team stats this year, only 2 players average more clearances (Dusty and Cotch) and only 2 average more contested possessions (Dusty and Cotch) than when Caddy was playing midfield time for Geelong.

He is not playing to his strengths at the moment but playing where the team needs him to. He will play more midfield time as the season goes on. His big strengths for us are his flexibility. If a mid gets injured in the game he can go into the contest a lot more. See Saturday, Vlastuin gets injured in the 3rd quarter, I don't think its coincidence that Caddy had by far his best quarter in the last (9 possessions, only had 6 in the first 3).

Re: Welcome to Tigerland - Josh Caddy

As s forward Lloyd is better as a mid miles is better.

Trying to compare him to other sides like players, mid/forward types

Adelaide - douglas
Brisbane - Zorko
Carlton - armfield
Collingwood - greenwood
Essendon - Howlett
Freo - Suban
GC - hall
Hawks - Langford
North - Gibson
Saints - Weller
WC - Cripps?
Bulldogs - hunter?

He's only got a few of those covered IMO but he's gotta be better. I don't accept this "it's ok whilst we are winning that he is *smile*" because we have better options.

We said the same thing to Houli.

Good stuff. We've got a niche expertise in attracting competent flankers who want to be midfielders but we know aren't competent midfielders.

Well said CT, exactly my thoughts, and others have said as a pure inside mid his numbers are fine as a 2nd 3rd string mid. He adds versatily which in this day and age of footy is very much required. Cant understand the angst!

Re: Welcome to Tigerland - Josh Caddy

Ok ok, I get it now.we used pick 26 (and a nice contract to prise him away from his previous club) on him out on a guy who wants (expected) to play as a mid to but instead he's being played as a forward (who's kicked 2 goals in 3 games) with limited impact elsewhere and he's apparently not good enough to get a spot in our midfield but will become good insurance later in the season. A guy who was pick 7 and is now in his prime at 24 and 100 games under his belt.

Oh, and it's only when we start losing can we question this. Got it.

Not at all, not about winning and losing to question, but theres really no reason to question it, he has a body of evidence, you either agree or don't agree with RFC taking him for that pick..

I never expected Chris Judd, his body of evidence suggests hes a big bodied mid (which we have sadly lacked) and can play as a forward that hits the scoreboard.

So we used a pick 26 to get a guy who was originally pick 7, is mature, slotted straight in, has many years to go in his career, and who is doing pretty well kicking goals and chopping out for Dusty and Chimper in the midfield to good effect.

This is the glass half full perspective which I personally prefer, but if you want get your kicks out of complaining about it go for your life son.
