JON gone at years End...

Ridley said:
Shaun Higgins and Shannon Hurn also taken after him in the 2005 draft. JON has got to be our worst pick ever. He is a screaming dud. Always has been, always will be.

X factor. Pfffffttt!!! Thanks Francis.

mate, if you're gonna bag someone, then get your facts right first. this was greg millers draft. FJ's first draft was 2006

Sorry you are wrong
FJ was employed that year and took part in the PRE draft night discussions
FJ rated JON

i would laugh if JON got another contract, mainly because of the uproar it would cause on this site :hihi

edwards has been pretty good the last few weeks, JON has been in the 3rds. comparing them is ridiculous.

its not JON's fault he hasnt made it, it all comes down to player development, which we have had none.

You are the one who needs to get his facts right. 2005 was Jackson's draft and JON was his pick. He admitted as much to a number of posters on this site at a post draft function.

:blah

at least the club gave him a few games this year.

we had to be 100% sure he wasnt up to standard

and he is not, too slow with the ball

In FJ's defense re JON, he was very much part time that year and came in late on proceedings - the call was primarily Millers. His drafts since being a full time have been quite good.

Earlier in the year a lot of posters thought JON had turned the corner and was well on the way to 'making it'.

Go back and read the threads if you don't believe me.

He showed real potential at the start of the year and was matching it at AFL level without making errors. That is fact. I'm not saying this means he should be retained, or that he'll become a good player... but it's true that he had some good games this year where he didn't make typical JON errors.

At the risk of completely ruining my reputation, I've always liked several elements to JON's game. If he could increase awareness and composure (which does come with experience) then he would be a good player. Sadly I do believe he is so far back that any improvement left in him will only carry him from very bad to average.

His only chance of getting a new contract is if our new coach goes crazy about "club culture". JON lacks awareness but he has got a fantastic attitude on and off the field. I respect his character and hope he has a good end to the season.

When will the powers that be understand that a player who is slow in the head can't be developed?
Doesn't matter how fit you make him. Or how experienced through more game time.
If he's a slow thinker then he can't be helped.

I was one of those and think they you're overstating it. He showed potential but after that first couple of games regressed IMHO.

FJ was incharge of 05 he flew to Adelaide on the Thursday night of the draft to speak with Varcoe again, as he was choosing between he and JON, Dempsey and Muston were the others been wayed up, Muston was a certainty in FJs eyes if he hadnt done his knee. Foot injury Varcoe had was the difference between JON and he in the end.

Jon no doubt was a shocker

Cleve as much as I dislike can totally understand taking him at 24 and TC was just plain an simply unlucky with injuries which is something that happens in AFL.

In saying all that would be playing JON in the last 3 games, can do no harm ;)

That was my understanding. Millers call.

fj is not exactly going to come out and say that he didn't rate jon and that he was wallaces pick. he is simply not the type of player that fj rates and im guessing he had nothing to do with him

Fundamental flaw in the club if that is the case. FJ should have stood up to TW and told him "this guy fits none of our pressing needs, is a below average kicks and really doesn't have a true spot and has low footballing IQ and is a massive spud but he can mow a mean lawn".

We need Cameron to have the final say between FJ and the new coach if they go head to head and disagree.

FJ was only a volunteer at that stage with essentially no responsibility. If he did recommend JON it was probably based on totally incomplete information. I'd expect him now to have a lot more power to make decisions because it is his responsibility.

FJ hey? wasn't he millers mate and the only reason he got the job? is he still at the club?

I guess you can only go on what people tell you. FJ told numerous people who post, or used to post, on this site after that draft that JON was picked on his recommendation. Check out CC's post. I'm not sure why people are so hellbent on defending FJ. No doubt he's better than Miller but let's face it that's no great achievement.

There's a long way to go before we can declare our recruiting is at the level it should be.

It was Greg Miller, not Francis Jackson, who went over to the Geelong table at the end of the 2005 draft to discuss the future of his preferred selection at #8 - Travis Varcoe.

JON was Jackson's man as was documented at the time. This is not a bit of maybe. Jackson's man.

You're right, Ridley.

To be fair to Jackson, the draft he seemed to get righter was last year's and he only got two choices. Whoever elected to take only two youngsters at that draft should be sacked if he hasn't been already. And if it was Craig Cameron, who is on a five year contract, he should be moved the hell away from recruiting choices - if he hasn't already. Likewise whoever chose Tom Hislop and Spudley Whatsisname from Port. Oh that's right - Thompson. If you had a hand in either of those - there's the door.

You know what i like about March? He's not frightened to give duds directions to the dole office. Sayonara Miller, Terence. And Whoever.
