And yet due to that, we are able to reach our responsibility of paying 92.5% of the cap. Also the deal got us an extra pick in Nason.

Thanks Cameron indeed.

For what?

Should never have been re-signed in the first place.

First bloke we've tossed out in a while that hasnt gone and 'starred' in his new colours! Might add JON to that list soon. He is/was just terrible!

Might add JON to that list soon? ;D Others who haven't starred just from last year include Raines and Pattison. Peterson now line ball selection in Hawthorn's side. We've made the right choices wth these guys. Mind you there'd be quite a few on our list we could toss out who wouldn't star in other sides either, so it's probably not a tough gig to find those players.

Apart from Rodan who else have we discarded that went on and starred in the recent past?

So it's a good thing to use our salary cap to pay the opposition's players? If we are having such trouble reaching our minimum salary cap that only points up another failing of the List Manager.
Instead of delisting Schulz and using pick 70 in the 2008 draft, we kept him and got the "extra" pick 71 in 2009 by paying part of Port's salary cap?

Backing the coach by blaming him for Cameron's decisions?
No wonder Richmond is in it's current state with such a lack of accountability.

Ottens has been decent, but not a star.
It's really only Rodan who has shown up our lack of development.
As for the rest of Greg Beck's draftees - they're terrible no matter where they play.

FWIW Streak, i know a bloke who sits in the box with Rocket Eade. He was also at the doggies when super recruiter Scott Clayton was there and he had rated JON top 10 and would have picked him before Shaun Higgins. Many recruiters also rated Fiora above Pav. Recruiting is not an exact science.
I blame our development of players as much as recruiters, although both depts have clearly under performed.

Would you prefer we payed average and youthful players more than they deserve in order to reach the salary cap? That sets a good standard for the future, where middling players will expect to be paid more, leaving less for our stars and increasing the likelihood of them leaving. With 14 players on entry-point wages this year, we were always going to struggle to reach the minimum.

Or perhaps we should have followed the example of Melbourne Storm and performed some "creative accounting" so that on face value we achieve the cap?

You make this job of List Manager sound so easy. I'm sure Craig Cameron never explored any other possibilities, he just offered the money to Port. I'm pretty sure Schulz was contracted for last year as well, but don't let that get in the way of a good rant. At least we got something for him.

Carlton is still paying some of Fevola's wages, I believe. Do you consider that a failing of Carlton's list manager too?

You have to have the talent, or at least access to it, before you can get that to work for you SB.

I was thinking more the reverse of the Storm situation there Streak.

I'm sure there's a penalty for paying under 92.5% of the cap. If we, say, added $10k to every contract on our second set of books (perhaps writing it back as a "optional financial donation" to the club), then there's ~$400k we could add to our overall salary cap. It'd still be creative accounting, but rather than hiding additional payments to players, we'd be concealing that we aren't paying our players enough (by the rules of the game, anyway...what they may deserve is an entirely different argument). ;D

There were plenty others to. I remember pre-draft compairsons between JON and Peter Matera!

And hindisght is a wonderful thing.

But I shake my head after seeing him recently. Can't see him staying at the Eagles for long, but of all clubs, he probably has the best chance of emerging playing for them.
