Jay Schulz [Merged]

Give Schulz the rest of the season to prove once and for all he's not good enough. Actually how about a challenge? I challenge anyone to find a key forward player who has averaged 5.8 possesions a game in 48 games and went on to be a regular AFL player in the last 10 years. Actually has anyone averaged that after 48 and gone on to be a good regular player. How do people really think Schulz has a top-notch career ahead of him. I can only see him, at the very best, as a 3rd forward in an AFL team. Really, at this stage, I would hang my hopes on Reiwoldt and Hughes and whatever else we can pick up in the next two years. Schulz has had his chances. He doesn't have the footy smarts or the desire to be a worthy AFL player.

In 2001 Cameron Mooney was aged 22 (same age as Sarge)

for the entire 2001 season he had...

11 games, 43 kicks, 39 Handballs, 25 marks and 3 goals

Schulz so far in 2007:

11 games, 57 kicks, 26 handballs, 46 marks and 14 goals

I say this cause a mate of mine who is a cats fan brought this up to me when i talking about Jay one day.....he remembers how crap mooney was in his early years...roos dumped him end of 1999...turns out to be one of the comps most dynamic players.

...id persevere.

Most players with those sort of numbers after 48 games are ruckmen. The nearest forwards I can find are

Mark Williams 6.7 possessions, 99 goals
Scott Cummings 8.8 possessions, 108 goals

Even Presti who is semi-legendary for his low stats averaged 7.7.

Good stuff tha8ball!

Exactly what I am on about.

He is still young for a big man, and hasn't played much due to injuries and the like either.

Oldie my dear Man Please NO

As one of my favourite and respected posters mate please do not fall into defending Jay for that one game FFS. Thats for those who well ......................... youre much better than that. ;)

Dont do it again. :police:

;D

Not that silly craigo. ;)
More making a point that it's early days for Hughes and Riewoldt rather than drumming up Jay (this time ;D).
Schulz kicked that bag of six in his second season don't forget.
Just making the point that neither Hughes or Riewoldt have proved anything at this stage despite the hype asscociated by a handful of goals.
The way some go on you would think they are certs to be the next great hopes of the RFC.

With Richo's days numbered and Kingsley's impending departure, he'll be here next year to see out his contract.

Mooney never played in 99. 2001 was Cameron Mooney's 2nd year, he'd only played 17 game up until then and on top of it he played quite a fair proportion of his time in the ruck. By the time Mooney was on 48 games he was averaging over 10 possessions a game. Mooney really hit his straps in his 4th season but even then was predominantly a ruckman. This year Mooney has played predominantly forward for the first time in his career and has shown in a top-notch team that he is serviceable (40 goals).

Well, a new excuse to hold on to an underachiever - he is comparable to Cameron Mooney!

Its not an excuse...thought it was interesting to note that Cam Mooney was written off by a lot of people in his early days but for several reasons he became a decent player. I just think its pretty foolish to think we would throw away a 22yr old KPP who can take a mark and kick a goal....but i guess we are just oozing those types of players.....

as for going on about Mooney playing in the ruck...i dont care what he was doing Goodone....that had nothing to do with it...it was just noting how KPP players as a rule take longer to find a position (like you stated) so its probably worth perservering with Sarge - at his age and in our position...good attempt to kill my argument though ;).....long live the Sarge!!

atleast mooney was a mean *smile*er and clipped a few blokes along the way in his early mediocre days, schulz would rather ko himself

if the recruitment of kingsley was meant to be the kick up the butt he needed and it still hasnt happened then he is in real trouble

if krakouer can get to 100 games though id still give jay a few more

Fair enough 8ty. Let's agree on one more year. Though he'll never get the delivery Mooney gets.

mooney's good form has highlighted just how much of a rubbish kick he is

if only jay could get himself the same number of opportunites

With our crap delivery and Richo stampeding most contests it is amazing that any young forward can make an impression in the Tigers forward line. We have bigger problems than Jay Schulz. The boy can play, no doubt about that. Ground time, confidence and a decent midfield would work wonders for him.

And yes, it stood out like dogs proverbials on Sunday the amount of times Schulz would be in a winnable marking contest only to be knocked out of position by Richo steamrolling the contest. Also noticed he was one of the few to put pressure on Port's backmen waltzing out of defence.

Agree completely! I recon Schulz would have had a couple more goals to his name (and people commenting on the improved play) if it wasn't for the selfish play of Richoman. Also remember Schulz chasing lots of Port players around our forward 50; he and Edwards (when played up forward) were the only Tiger forwards to do so consistently.

Didn't Richo clean up Schulz last time they played together in the same forward line? :-\

Are they both mute?

As much as I love Richo, I don't think he would hear anything once he gets the rush of blood to get to a marking contest.

It's more about being in a better position to mark.

I bet that excuse really flew around someone like lockett!

sh!te - I dont get you RFC fans, it puzzles me how much you sh!t on your own :help

Do you think Stewart Loewe was dumb enough to get in Lockett's way? Was Lockett dumb enough to get in Stewie's way? No, they worked out their spheres of influence and worked within them.

Richo is a great player - but he is not perfect. If you class balanced opinions on players as offensive you won't last long on this site.
