Jake Batchelor

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

It was the right decision. Needs time at Coburg to work on his game. If he's good enough he'll be back.

I believe he can play and wouldn't be writing him off too soon. Imo his problem started when we tried to make him a 3rd tall defender instead of a tallish flanker , he is too big and has lost his mobility.

To me he has to get leaner and do a lot of running and we will see the early version of Batch again.

I hope

Good post.

The 2011 clip above looks a leaner, faster, more dexterous version of the Batchelor that's going around now.
However I think he's struggled for 2 years now. Will be lucky to remain on our list at this rate.

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Maybe he can't handle the extra weight he's built up after his first season.

Coaching staff have helped destroy his mobility and tried to pack too much weight on too quick and then play him an unsuited role. Same thing that they did to Astbury. I think I remember both of them putting on 6kg+ in 1 year.

You might be right. Both started well and looking like really good players and both have gone backwards

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Cant see him making it

Has gone steadily backwards since a promising debut year

I am concerned about this as well. Griffiths also looks bigger and a lot slower this year compared to last

Think Astbury's knee injury effected his mobility more than extra weight. Though perhaps was a little bulky after year 1.
Plenty of footballers cope with increases to their body mass.

Or maybe he's just lazy and out of form?

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

That draft is not looking too flash for us, Conca (tick), Batchelor, Helbig, Macdonald (gone), Derickx (going) Gourdis (gone). It did look good at the time, and two years ago Batchelor looked the best of them all.

Not much love for the batchelor party these days it seems.

I remain a fan, though I do concede his major flaw -- struggles to match it against key forwards, too slow below his knees for anything else. He is also prone to brain fades, indicating he struggles to cope mentally with 120 mins of football.

Grimes has him covered in every way imaginable.

Talk of trading him is understandable but I'd hate to see him go. Pick 35 from memory -- I'm sick of these picks being a bust for us.

For all his flaws, batch remains a penetrating kick, cool headed handpass and when he's on you feel he can be a solid Chaffey type. That's a major compliment.

But Dimma needs to get kinky if batch is to have a future at RFC.

Lets go #3 or #4 forward in 2014. For the same reason he's an awkward match up down back, he could be the same up forward. I can see him being a pretty good lead over 20m, though he's not overly quick, but the key will be he's a very good clean mark.

I can also see him having no problem from 40 out on a tight angle.

I like batch and I see this as a way forward.

Helbig showed signs earlier as well. Not so much now.

Helbig has had a very bad run with injuries.

Toward the end of this year he was regularly getting close to 30 possessions as an inside mid for Coburg.

A solid pre season may see him come on in leaps and bounds 2014.

With Tuck retiring, he has a great opportunity to stake a claim in the best 22.

This. My position on Helbig exactly.

Most drafts look good at the time and most drafts look bad after a few seasons.

I don't have any problems with Batchelor's development, considering that he is still only 21yo.

To be 21yo and have 39 games of footy in 3 seasons as a HBF is a good effort.
Most junior HBFs spend a good 2 or 3 seasons learning their craft in the magoos before they play senior footy, then usually need 50-100 games to show that they have the position nailed.

Batchelor has come as an 18yo into what was a non-existent defence and, at 188cm, had to cope with fast flankers and mobile talls.
He has also shown that he can be a shut-down defender as well as a rebounding one.
And, for a junior, done it well.
In that time, he has built himself up from a starting 78 kg to his current 87 kg.

Unfortunately, this season, he has been bothered by what I believe is a recurring knee injury, and needs to make full recovery before contemplating putting further pressure on it.

The extent of knee damage to one so young is a concern, but he is still a junior until next year when he moves into the developmental phase, 22-24yo.

Our list is short of running medium HBFs, Batchelor is a good still-junior one, unfortunately currently carrying an injury. I hope it's not too long to see him competing for a senior spot, and racking up his 100th game in the not too distant future.

Did not realise he had knee injury. Makes sense hope it is repairable he is a decent tough player
