can't believe this guy's almost the youngest on the list !

Is it just me or does he look a lot older than he actually is?

I think this guy is a ripper . What I loved about his game on sunday was his run and carry a few times . That time late in the 2nd quarter when he waited for the right moment to release to Jack whilst running through the middle showed me he has a great footy awareness , plus is was a great kick .

The development of Batchelor and Dea on the HBF's is very important to us . It allows us to release Lids and Houli more often further up the ground and strengthens the midfield. I really like both these kids . Both are a really good size as well .

Its amazing that Batch was hardly mentioned in the draft discussions but he has looked like an AFL footballer from the beginning .
Spot on again Sinman. I had him at #52 in the 'allybabe's top 75' thread, so there was a bit of footage of him on the AFL site and youtube. He's better than that though.

He has the presence of a footballer beyond a teenager for sure

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Jake should become a top liner in the competition and that's when the jornos will start with there headlines!
'this bloke should've have been a top 5 pick'
'Richmond redeems itself at the draft!'
'richmond the new super power in recruiting'

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

Bloody hell, being a Richmond defender is more dangerous than a bouncer at a biker bar. They are dropping like flies- Grimes, Astbury, Moore, Newman and now Batch

It's something that has been overlooked. The backline is shot at the minute. Round 1 next year, it will be very interesting to see who is in the back six.

If everyone is fit, I reckon the six is Rance, Grimes, Moore, Newman, Houli & Batchelor. Deledio into the midfield. I could even see us taking Matthew Buntie as another running back flanker who is in the Goddard mould. Will end up a tall midfielder.

Batchelor has had a outstanding year, a real shock how good he has been in year one.

Minimum 100 gamer IMO. Problee 150+.

Old fashioned. Macho. Teenager. RIP Jamie Tape but this fellow is better IMO. Scruffy when he needs to be and clean in the clear.

Scoop, a question for someone who watched him for three years rather than just at Richmond. What's his rate of improvement been like from juniors? I ask because he seems so mature physically and mentally I wonder about the scope for more upside from him.

Totally agree, he looks the goods this guy. Great memory of Jamie in his first year V Bulldogs at the G in a thriller late in the last Qtr ball went into the goalsquare with Tape one on one with Richard Osborne, Jamie gave him the old fashioned hip bump and took the mark saving the game for us.

Hope Buntie is a right footer. We dont need any more lefties back there.

No Astbury. Fallen from favour?

Re: Pick 30 - Jake Batchelor

I don't think Moore will get up. I've put him in the Cogs category. Astbury will get that spot. Dea needs a spot as well.

Gees, when fully fit do we have too many defenders ?

Col, I think I saw Batchelor once maybe twice, I had a very limited view on him. He missed the Champs last year so he wasn't really on my radar. He has taught me a lesson in players that miss the Champs through injury or limited form should still be kept in the frame for drafting. I think this year there is another terrfic example of this with Elliott Kavanagh from the Western Jets. The club that has the guts to pick him will get a footballer. He is one to track over the rest of the year and could have a Dyson Heppell type rasie from second or third rounder to top 10 is he shows enough.

Your point about scope improvement is valid. But if you look at photos from before Jake was drafted till today, you will see a change in his body shape. Most of it, has been done with one AFL preaseason. That tells me that he isn't fully furnished out and will turn into a great size physically. As for rate of improvement playing wise, he has a pretty good skill set and makes the right choices with the ball. I reckon Sam Fisher is the type he could end up like. Already Jake has shown me, he can zone off and play that third man up puncher (Nick Maxwell type) when he gets stronger and more confident he could start to pluck them and take that step to a Fisher.

Yep, that's true. I wanted Luke Parker who is now at the Swans and looks like being a 100+ gamer. But I am more then happy with Batch.

If his knee is ok and he gets back to form he will/could replace Moore.

What it does tell me is that McGuane is surplus to needs. Trade.

To contradict myself slightly, the Maxwell/Fisher even Grimes comparison is the logical one. It is a role that favour players who read the play well, the fact he does that fairly well already perhaps is a good sign that he will have a decent upside.

Your right. When I actually think about it, Batchelor could end very much like Jack Grimes who plays the same role as a Fisher but is more creative with ball in hand. And that will be the test for Jake, what he can do with ball in hand. For years Chris Newman refused to take the game on by foot. Just played safe, sideways or the dinky kick forward. Over the last three or fours years he has begin to take the game on by foot and has become a much better footballer because of it. We need Batchelor doing that type of thing in year 2.
