Jake Batchelor

had some faint hopes for Batch but he needs to do a whole lot more

He was playing better than this in yr 1. Honestly he's sloth like. Quite bizarre to watch.

This. We've done reverse development. You wouldn't draft him to any club based on this form. Destroyed him.

All the while his TAC Cup team mate Luke Parker, who Francis Jackson didn't rate, is a top 10 player in the competition.

Great recruiting again Francis :clap

Yeah, but so did 39 others. (Or thereabouts). Must have been more than Frank who missed something OR the kid is more determined to get the best out of himself than the normal player OR the swans are great at supporting their players development.

Probably a bit of everything.

Yes but we were watching Batchelor all year so Parker was under our noses as well. Pretty sure Parker was winning B&Fs all through his junior career. And we needed nidfielders but again Francis plumped for the plodding vanilla flanker.

He is a *smile* recruiter Jackson.

Jake isn't the problem. Was good last year in a functioning backline. This year he is being played as a key back at 188cm.

What have they done to him. He ran blokes down, one grab marks, crunching tackles, and ran to create...

They got confused with "harnessing his talent" to throwing a harness on him like a horse

Batchelor has been squeezed through the Hardwick coaching machinery until every bit of his natural flair and intuition for the game has been pressed out of him to fit into the coaches much maligned “processes” that equal failure and ruined careers. Yes the coach does make a huge difference to the team he is coaching and Hardwick has been found wanting again and again and again.

This coach is part of the problem and in no way is part of the solution. And I still believe Batch can be part of a good, well coached defense and play good footy again.

Have to admit, not a Jake fan much any more, but it was a shock to see this video. The two things that stick in my mind now are what Waite did to him in the EF (but happy to agree that it was a dumb mismatch and the taller, quicker, more athletic Grimes should have been on him) and, in retrospect how we overlooked Parker for him. Appears to be another huge mistake now.

Also he's come to look a little slack with his ball-use, not quick enough. However, looks an all-round quality back-man here in this vid.

But, I must say, he looks a lot heavier and far less fit and agile now. So what is it that has led him to this? The coaching entirely? Or the physical training program overall too?

Yeah, I put up some footage of Steve Morris from his first season with us (there's another from his SANFL days) and watch him streaming out of the backline providing great run.

Just begs the question: what has happened to these 2 to have them as non productive slow plodding hacks?

It's called a highlights video for a reason.
It's all the best little bits he did over a whole heap of games n they've chopped off n erased all the dodgy stuff ups.
Never yet seen a player look like a dud in his highlights package.

Why would Parker still in your mind? Parker was Pick #40. In other words every club ignored him up to 39 picks. Additionally between Batchelor picked at 30 and Parker at 40, Batchelor has played more games than 8 other players. In hindsight you could argue that in fact it's lucky we picked Batchelor ahead of Ariel Steinberg at 31. Picks at this range are notoriously hit and miss.
