Jake Batchelor

I haven't been a batch fan but he played good footy this year.

The match up was wrong and Batch did play very loose at times as well but I think any blame is better directed at Hardwick.

Again in Hindsight with Astbury in we could have sat him on Petrie and then played Rance on Waite.

In hindsight Dave Astbury was a better inclusion than griffiths
But in hindsight we might have also left out Titch and Cotch and Ellis and Batchelor and every other player who played below par. That's the good thing about hindsight.

Batchelor and Hunt got put to the sword by better opponents who are both big match players. In Hobart it was Thomas on Grimes. *smile* happens. If we had better they would have played.

Batchelor from his work this year is perfectly serviceable but might have been dropped tactically for this game due to the height issue had we someone in the 2s who was good enough. I'm assuming we didn't because he wasn't. He'll be fine again next year - when allowed to play within his limitations.

In all honesty given the number of forward 50 entries was his performance so poor anyway? Someone was always going to stand-up given the amount of supply.

Blame the midfield rather than Batchelor.

Waite got it presented lace out a few times. Not sure who could have stopped him.

You're right; midfield was pantsed. Certainly wasn't Jake's fault but the whole approach by our club and coaching panel was made a fool of. I posted little during the week because of having a really bad feeling pre-match; as I said on on my only post - felt like were "sitting ducks." However, this was a poor mismatch - Waite kicked 4.2; got awarded their highest fantasy points (for what that is worth). Rance, Grimes and Houli were also disadvantaged by a thrashed midfield but still beat their opponents overall, to their credit.
It's obvious if all our key backs are outsized that they must be able to compensate somehow (have already said) e.g. by speed. But Waite was always going to beat Batch in every respect, and this time he kicked pretty well. But it is Batch 's bad decisions when in possession that get me too; go look at the replay.
We have no monster back to play on the 200cm gorillas many clubs have up forward now. Rance is brilliant but 194 cm! Needed to bring Elton on, or use Astbury if he was up to it. I'm sick of asking why Dea never got a game. [Yes his knockers will say, because he's no good. But Miles and Lambert managed to step up to AFL level from strong exposed VFL form, when given a run of games!!!]
Never mind; another hard year's work and tangible improvement wasted. What I am fed up with is being so completely outsmarted by the likes of Scott, Brayshaw, Harvey and co. Tactically and strategically pantsed, aided and assisted by AFL of course. I'm not feeling any better by today. Don't think next year will be a walk-up start. Many improvers on the horizon!

Tend to agree in one way. North were quite unique with 3 talls in the forward line (the types that can perform) and we weren't able to stop the flow from the midfield. In this situation the way to win is to limit the supply to the forward line. Still I thought Batch was very poor in many other areas such as disposal and decision-making when he did get the ball.

Jake had a problem a few years ago where if he started out badly he lost all confidence and things only got worse from there on in. I can remember a game against North as well at Etihad where this happened. Once again Hardwick insisted on using him as KPD. To his credit on Sunday although he was well beaten, he didn't totally lose it like he used to.

If he wasn't the worst player in our backline for decision making and disposal all year then you might be able to forgive one "bad day", but what happened was consistent with what happens when your 6th best defender is put on a quality opponent who can actually read the play.

He is the weak link in our back half, all the opposition analysts know this and it was exploited perfectly on Sunday. The big issue is that we don't have anyone better at the moment.

Perfect summary DC

So no hope for Astbury, Elton or Dea in future? All duds? (none delisted as of now)

His better then Morris, Moore, hunt, Chaplin and Ellis
His ok. A bit of a lazy prick but overall his ok

Look into the stats. They don't lie. Top 5 defensive team last year says he does and is apart of something that works. Our backline does what it needs to do week in week out and Jake is undervalued because he plays a role really well. His goal is team first and foremost and his support of the other less defensive players is pretty damn solid. Jake playing is one of our defensive keys until we can find someone better.

Would help if Chaplin could actually play on the bigger fwds I.e Waite in last years final instead of Batchelor having to play a lot taller than he is. I would think he is up against it though if the club wants Astbury down there. Grimes, Vlastuin, Houli and Yarran as the smaller running backs. Astbury and Rance key backs and Chaplin playin loose.
