Jake Batchelor

Yes, was screaming at the TV (as couldn't go today) to get Bach off Waite, shift Grimes. Dimma just lacks it strategy wise and has little imagination. You could see this pre-match, in fact I have not been a fan of B all season. He is not a very smart player either it has to be said. Why did we only give Elton one game? And play him on an in-form Cloke? Not saying he's the answer but ALL of our backs were out-sized today. Rance compensates with his speed, athleticism and reading the play well (Chaplin does in this aspect too), but believed sooner or later we would be exposed. I think posts re Astbury probably correct; injuries have destroyed his pace. Dimma wouldn't give Dea a go either. Altogether got complacent in the lead-up. Out-smarted and foxed by Roos. Thought our previous H & A form would be enough, such a great defence etc. rather than actually look at the match-ups for Noirf's A team. Waite was way too big, fast, good in-the-air and smart/experienced for Batchelor.
Dimma himself admitted that starting Rance in the middle for the Collingwood game was a bone headed move. We need to clone Rance.

I don't blame Batch. Whole side were crap. Easy to single out the 16th-22nd best players in those circumstances

I don't really blame him, he did the best he could. The coach gave him a job that he's shown before he's not up to. This one rests with Hardwick. However it does mean that Batchelor is another one of those limited players we have who will let us down in games like todays.

Every good side has a couple of Batches. Its about leadership and culture. Bottom 4 players in every side is pretty standard, IMO. Blaming players like Batch or Hunt is missing the point. Its not like we were playing West Coast or Hawthorn.

Was exposed on the day. We need a real #3 back. Our rumoured interest in Garland may indicate that we know it.

We have had the 2nd or 3rd best defense during the season so it makes sense to keep them together. We lost it by not adhering to the game plan not running to receive, that in turn has a snowball effect leading to some forwards getting off the leash.

It's an indictment on 195cm Troy Chaplin that 188cm Jake Batchelor had to play second tall on The Dog. If Junkyard Jake were 195 he'da leashed him. He's too small for how big he is.

Wait. Too big for how small he is. (One of those.)

I've been a critic of Jake, however thought he did a great job this season as part of the back half unit, yesterday no doubt got that match up you worry about, thou Waite is bloody good when he comes too play...No issue with him still on the list but would love to see some pace an skill added down there

Lol to all those that bagged me mid-year when I said this dud would cost us a final. I rest my case

Do you think that was an ideal match up for Jake? Of all the players who were well beaten he's one I wouldn't blame for our loss.

Jake didn't cost us a final. Jake did his best on someone that was significantly bigger than he was. He was outreached in basically every marking contest. Additionally, our midfield capitulated faster than a brown paper bag in Noah's flood. The roos were smart enough to know to kick it to the guy who had the best match-up.

The guy that cost us the final is in our leadership group. Which one you ask? Take your pick of three....
On top of that, picking 2 guys who had played two games between them in the previous 8 weeks.......

We were outcoached. We were outplayed. Half the team had no heart. Jake wasn't one of them.

"rest my case"

Does that mean you wont be back? :)

The amount of times the ball was flying into their forward-50 (especially the 3rd quarter), all our defenders were under pressure.
I don't think you can blame any of our back-6 for what happened yesterday unless they turned the ball over.
The match was lost in the middle.

Of course it was, and any suggestion that it was lost due to any other factor is rubbish.

Midfields win games, backlines can sometimes only save games.

I reckon he was protected by the rest of the back 7 for a lot of the year and his flaws were hidden. They came to the surface yesterday with a horrible match up in a final. It's the same argument with Batch - play him on a KPF and he's too small. Try to put him on a smaller opponent, generally he's too slow and he doesn't offer enough rebound. He should be depth in 2016.

yep, when I saw batchelor lining up on waite (who plays his best games against us) I thought "oh no".

this match up cost us the game.
