Jake Batchelor

Don't blame Batch. We were crap downfield. Delivery into their fwd 50 was good. Our use of the ball was rubbish.
Nah Batch was bad regardless. He kept getting moved in the 2nd half and his opponent would have a ball. As for his disposal and decision-making. It wasn't good. Stood out compared to Rance and Grimes.

Today showed that he is one of a number players that need to be upgraded if we are to take the next step. Not good enough to play in a finals winning side.

North exposed him as the weak link and bent him over

Hardwick - finally - moved Grimes onto Waite just before half-time after he had again embarrassed Batchelor with his third goal, and then unbelievably moved him off after the break and let Waite continue to lead Batchelor to the ball and win virtually every contest in the second half.

Batchelor has been the weakest link in our backline all year and with guys like Vlaustin playing with an injury late in the season he could no longer be hidden by his teammates.

I would have subbed Jake and moved Griffiths to D50.

I thought Griff would have been the swing man into defence when they got a run on - I thought that was the reason he was selected today - big men stand up in the last qtrs. when every gets tired - so I thought the decision to select him was OK - for some reason we let their talls get on top in the second half.

Waite played well in the elimination final 2 years ago which p1sses me off.

I actually though Chaplin mistake early in the 3rd where he gifted Nahas a goal was the game changer though - more so than Batch performance

Spot on and give he is undersized was always going to expose him.

We have a team full of em unfortunately

Batchelor is fine when teams play with just 2 main talls (like most teams) which is why he has been pretty good all year. When we come up against teams with a 3 pronged tall attack he gets seriously exposed which was why out of all the teams in the finals this year I was mostly worried about North and Adelaide as I worried that Batch would be exposed. Was given a complete bath by Waite today. I was also shocked after half time when I saw Batch move back onto him. The most annoying thing was that even though he gave up height to Waite, it was his reading of the play and that he couldn't keep up with the speed of Waite off the mark that he really struggled with today.

Is fine when we play against most teams but really struggles when we play against that 3rd tall.

The problem is that even now Hardwick doesn't realise this about Jake and keeps trying to play him as a tall. There are a few we need to upgrade if we're ever going to actually win a final, and Jake is one of them.

average player. not a key defender, slow, average skills. what does he offer? trade to whoever is interested. Astbury should be playing in his spot minding the bigger forwards to release rance to CHB and to be gaining experience when chaplin moves on.

Am a bit surprised Astbury wasnt given more of a go this year. Thought maybe it was for stability but then we went and brought in Conca and Griffiths so that can't be it.

I would have gone for that a year or so ago, but I don't think Astbury is the answer anymore. The injuries appear to have taken their toll and he's really really slow. Waite would have killed him too.

Absolutely staggering.

Beavis saves his weakest effort for the finals.

Fantastic.

astbury has been shafted and should be in the team.

Maybe next season, but he looked very slow right from the opening of this season.
Agreed far too slow for AFL footy.
Get rid of him.
list clogger now due to injuries after a promising start to his career.

The problem with Batchelor is he cannot take a taller forward who is a strong mark (like Waite) and he cannot take the smaller guys as he is too slow (we moved him onto 1 earlier in the year, may have been Thomas or Betts and he was smashed), so he can only really take the mediums which makes him incredibly one dimensional when we really need him to be more than that. Grimes is the model we need, if only we could clone Grimes we would be fine. In fact if we could clone Grimes, Rance and Vlastuin and we are set for our backline.

Yes, was screaming at the TV (as couldn't go today) to get Bach off Waite, shift Grimes. Dimma just lacks it strategy wise and has little imagination. You could see this pre-match, in fact I have not been a fan of B all season. He is not a very smart player either it has to be said. Why did we only give Elton one game? And play him on an in-form Cloke? Not saying he's the answer but ALL of our backs were out-sized today. Rance compensates with his speed, athleticism and reading the play well (Chaplin does in this aspect too), but believed sooner or later we would be exposed. I think posts re Astbury probably correct; injuries have destroyed his pace. Dimma wouldn't give Dea a go either. Altogether got complacent in the lead-up. Out-smarted and foxed by Roos. Thought our previous H & A form would be enough, such a great defence etc. rather than actually look at the match-ups for Noirf's A team. Waite was way too big, fast, good in-the-air and smart/experienced for Batchelor.
