Momentai I think that’s it - we can’t play that extra behind the ball in defence like we used to (and rely on immense pressure and the man on the mark to cover for him up the ground) because it is too easy now for the opposition to use incisive kickers through their spare man with the stand rule (who they have because we used to have a spare in defence).
Got there thanks for your help!

Thanks.
Re Paragraph 1, you have the kicker and the man on the mark. Outside that it is still 17 on 17. I agree it is easier to pass the ball at angles because the man on the mark cannot impact that kick with his movement until the kicker moves off the line. But the person he is kicking it to is not an ‘extra player’.
…….

…. Again as I see it, before the introduction of the stand rule, our man on the mark constituted a very important part of our defence. He moved with the kicker and was not limited in the same way as he is now. Evidently we had a reputation for defending vigorously from the mark.
That contribution is now taken away from the defending team making it easier for the kicker to find a free team mate, - if he can kick accurately.
Anyway up to you.

Great VFL player that's all. Proved today he is not up to it. Might as well give Dow a chance now. GR another RCD.

He deserves a run of games. Not in out etc. The jury is still out but would persist

Another who has had his development absolutely destroyed.
Broken goods now. He has become a VFL hero now. Stars in the 2s but will never be any good for senior football

Shows signs of being a good player.
Keep playing him and see how he develops with a continuous run.
His lack of pace is a concern for me.

Agree - it’s the lack of speed that kills him. Can’t get to enough contests/can’t get away when he has the ball. Only chance is as an inside midfielder.

Madness playing him on a wing - stupidity

We haven’t got anyone else, so may as well keep playing him. I suspect he’s one of those cursed players who is better than VFL, but not good enough for AFL.

He's a sub 3 sec, 20m sprinter. Should be in the guts, not out on the wings. We're stuffing up this kids career.

I thought he was ok at the ground, but he's slow without the ball. He's ok with it, makes fairly good decisions but defensively he should be better than he is.

Had a social event on couldn’t watch closely at all. Don’t tell me he played on the wing

No he played through the middle today, but was essentially the extra mid. I don't think he went in the middle for a centre bounce for the game, was running in from HB at centre bounces but was involved around the ground.

Not from what I observed. Players rotated a lot. He attended the middle a bit from what I could see.
But he's the same every time I watch him. Average.

But there's no point not giving him a run of games.

Attended 5 centre bounces - wasn't credited with a clearance from centre.
Had 4 clearances from around the ground stoppages.
The AFL has him down for 8 contested possessions out of 17, 88% disposal.
4 Score involvements
89 mins on ground (about 3/4 of the game)
3 tackles
2 I50, 1 R50.

His posessions weren't very impactful though (is that a word?) - 181m gained so we gain 10m on average from each time he touched the ball.
As I've said all along. He's not gonna win you a premiership off his own boot, you wouldn't build a midfield around him.
But you need some serviceball players to give your A graders a rest on the bench, who can stay neutralise their opponent. I don't think he's far
off being that type of player, if he's used properly.
