Picture Bart Simpson at a blackboard:

Jack Ross is not an outside midfielder.

Dimma Hardwick: "Watch me try"

Jack Ross isn't an elite footballer. But he's AFL calibre if we treat him right.
We're not.

Coz sometimes you need nuts n bolts n a bit of string to hold n organise all the fancy bits n pieces into the right places. Otherwise you just end up with an expensive pile of crap lying on the floor.

Ross will add nothing useful

Phhhht. So the nightcarter thinks we're gunna run with 22 super hunks each on a mill per year so we can win every flag in existence back to back for a dozen years or more. Fantasy land's a nice place to visit in your spare time.

The first question I would ask is what is Ross's trade value? If it's a packet of chips then he's probably peripheral and easily upgradeable.

Probably worth bugger all as our match committee don't seem to overly rate him, yep he's also probably easily upgradeable. The way we're going at the moment there's plenty on our list upgradeable.
Considering he's on our list at the moment though and with the injuries n performance of the side where it is, I'm not sure why we wouldn't at least try to get some more games into him.
If he struggles, it's no great loss overall, match performance or trade value.
If he plays to some reasonable extent, then perhaps he helps improve our match day performance or creates some trade value if we decide we're looking elsewhere.
Playing magoos as he is means he's just sitting n rotting, might as well delist n pick another mid season

A timely reminder of the player we recruited:

STRENGTHS: Inside/outside mix, aggression, ball winning, efficiency, speed
IMPROVEMENTS: Endurance, tackling

SUMMARY: Jack Ross is a player who has flown under the radar to put together a very impressive year amongst a raft of stars in the Oakleigh Chargers midfield. A TAC Cup mainstay, Ross has shown signs of an all-round midfield game with a good mix of aggressive ball winning, and outside class to deliver well by foot. Given he wins his fair share of contested ball, with an average of 5.4 clearances while kicking the ball long 28.7 per cent of the time, Ross’ disposal efficiency is highly impressive and a testament to his decision making when given time and space. That mix of class and aggression is rare, and puts him in good stead for making an impact at the next level with his 86.7kg frame. Given his power, Ross’ 20m sprint time of 2.95 seconds makes sense, but he could look to use that more when bursting from packs. Despite his aggressive approach, Ross can also improve on his tackling numbers, averaging just 2.4 as a midfielder who often finds himself in the clinches. As a power-based athlete, endurance is also something Ross should improve to become a more dominant midfielder and run out games with more than his average of 20.5 disposals. There is not much Ross can’t do as a midfielder though, and he looks like a ready-made prospect.

Knightmare:
Extending the Associated Public Schools' (APS) win streak to eight straight against Associated Grammar Schools Victoria (AGSV) in the annual Victorian private school competition clash, Jack Ross was arguably the most influential on the field. The 186cm, 85kg, midfielder who in each of his past four matches for Oakleigh has featured among their best players, showcased attributes to suggest his draft stocks may rise in the lead-up to this year's AFL draft.

Performing a central role in APS' 11-point victory against AGSV, Ross won first possession at stoppages and demonstrated the power to burst through tackles. His loose ball-winning, ball use and decision-making were also impressive.

Following an invite to the state combine last week, Ross posted 27 disposals, 10 contested possessions, six marks, four clearances, eight inside 50s, one goal and two score assists.

As a potential ball-winning midfielder, Ross' game bares similarities to West Coast midfielder Dom Sheed as a powerful midfielder who uses the ball effectively. Ross is not a certain draft choice, having missed selection for the Under-18 Championships, but if he can help Oakleigh win a few finals, he may receive consideration late in the draft or as a rookie.

Will end up elsewhere like the Saints or something and become a handy player.

but what do people see?

1) he had poor disposal by hand and foot and crumbled in the contest (despite his OK early form)

2) he worked on his limitations (credit to him) and was handed a more outside role

3) he returned as a link player and restricted his possessions to safe gives he knew he could hit. low score involvement as others have flagged. low damage player compared to his overstudy Pickett

ross has been selected as a depth player and is the first to go when another option is available. so the club rates him exactly where I have him

so why all the dogged push for Ross to be in this team? we had what, four AFL-listed players in the VFL and Ross STILL wasn't selected against Sydney.

i am genuinely surprised by the passionate defense of what is a fringe player at best.

This bloke can be an AFL class player, Carts. Nobody has 20 of them.

Ignore the military haircut and read the numbers. Watch the play. The "Ross is very outside" school is being very gentle here. Ross is very outside. That's his nature. We didn't turn him into that role of player.

4/19 CP/UP last game and dropped. RFC would like more Contested. Back to the Magoos.

Poor disposal? Not always. Rushing it. Because very outside. Try it on.

Ross is better than he's showing. And can really use when in form. He lacks confidence. And form. He can fight his way back into the ones. Getting his hands dirty might help.

With so many of the underlist out he may not have to. MoJu should never have been recalled. But better if he does.
