Ivan Soldo

Dusty loves Soldo!

I reckon this is probably on the mark! Dusty’s form has been at an incredibly high level during the time Ivan has taken over the ruck. Could be a coincidence I guess.

Although I think Soldos ability to nullify the opposition rucks to at least allow the ball to be 50/50 in the middle has certainly contributed.

Possibly a case for arguing this although I never saw any issues with Dusty's ability to work well with Nanks in 2017/2018. Looking at this year's stats and Dusty Supercoach scores (not a bad way to judge performance for a midifelder like Dusty):

Dusty & Nanks have played 7 games together, Dusty's SC average score is 91
Dusty & Soldo have played 10 games together for an average of 106

There were two games where neither was rucking, Round 10 (Balta/CCJ) Dusty scored 92 and Round 13 where Chol was smashed in Adelaide (13 hitouts to 54) Dusty scored 108. On that basis I conclude on average Dusty plays best when we have a 2nd string ruckman getting obliterated.

Btw, that was an interesting tactic that WC used in the first quarter that led to the two free kicks against Soldo in the ruck contest. First Darling, then Allen, took front position, backed into Soldo and plunged forward like Greg Louganis off the 10 meter board.

Free kick, goal each time. Soldo adjusted well after quarter time and refused to concede front position. Presumably, that is what Kingsley was going ballistic about in the huddle.

He appears to be a bit of a thinking man’s ruckman. At the very least, he is coachable.

Hmmm Darling and Allen. ... got a touch of the Greg Louganis's. ...

Not that there's anything wrong with that!

They stopped short?
That’s my move

Looks like big Ivan is gonna be first ruck for a while based on Nanks injury report.

Nakas is really struggling.
It won’t be long before they rule him out for the season.
Cotchin needs to play at 100kph this week, we can’t afford him pulling up in the first final.

Dunno about him being a big gazelle. Not much grace about him. More a lumbering giraffe crossed with a silverback
I couldn't care less if he looked like a blind three legged dog who's owner had decided to tie two of the remaining legs together for fun.

If he gives us first use and competes like Sunday, he stays in I say.

The turnaround is truly remarkable.
Like many ( how wrong we can be ) had him delisting material.

How much is that attributed to his cousin ?

Just adds some much and competes well in the ruck. Certaintly gets a few free kicks his way when he plays in front. Very hard to move and he makes other rucks worry about him.

His trajectory has always been up since he started. It's just that he's come from so far back.

It's been a slow burn and there is a lot he still needs to improve, but his trajectory is still on the up.

The worry with young players is when they platau and aren't getting any better, unles they platau where Dusty has - through the stratosphere, no worries then!

exactly. a lot of posters dont seem to realise how long it takes for an AFL ruckman to develop, especially 1 who hasnt grown up playing a lot of footy, like Soldo. His improvement this year probably replicates his improvement every other year he has been with us.
as you say improvement isnt given though, neither is holding ground. hopefully Soldo can continue to improve over the next few years.

as an aside, I always thought the Gus Bus was on a similar path. When he arrived at the club he struggled to put one foot in front of the other. for his first few years he improved every year to the stage where he played a few AFL quality games. unfortunately those games were the exception and he soon reverted back to his early years form and his career was over.
