Ivan Soldo

The more I've been thinking about it today DDT I'm starting to think go with Nank & Soldo as Sandilands is a monster and Soldo showed early he has a leap.

He started to tire towards the end and with Boyds experience and their midfield winning easy contested football and clearing with ease I wouldn't be against taking another tall in and resting Castagna.

Nank can rest forward and has shown he can take a mark and kick a goal.

Warming to it but not sure. Soldo may need to build his fitness more and try that role more in the 2. His last attempt he was a little poor but the kid can mark and has an alright kicking action.

It would be great to give him more senior time this year.

Elton levelled up against Footscray. Must keep his spot. But so did Soldo. Just to a lower level - not that far off where Elton started four weeks ago. (Soldo has no tank yet.)

Soldo was flogged at times. But he was almost there a dozen other times. And he was getting the idea before he was gassed.

I'm very pleased that Soldo got a taste when he did.

Did Nank's suspension cost us the game? Definitely. Does Nank know that? Oh, yeah. But sometimes you have to give the young player a go anyway. (See Footscray last year.)

If he's dropped Soldo will be back.

agree with all that.

Late in the game, when Elton had the opportunity to mark the Lambert kick, the fact that he was there was a good sign.

His impact trajectory is upward, which is to be expected and rewarded.

Is it possible to set the bar any lower?

Agreed. Soldo is a work in progress. He now needs a couple of games to give him a proper taste before he inevitably goes back down to the VFL. He may well spend the next two years playing between the levels, a couple of senior games followed by a couple back at the lower level. Eventually, we will build some depth.

It is not quite too late to do this with Elton but he should have played more senior games by now. It is not a surprise that his best game is the game back in the seniors after being dropped back for a week. He was overwhelmed at first, went back and took stock and came back in better prepared.

Nankervis will not be able to ruck all season on his own. He is a 22 year old with less than 20 senior games. He may look more mature and play a bang-and-crash game but he is still raw and inexperienced. It is good to know that Soldo may well be able to ruck on his own for a game or two if needed and should be able to contribute in tandem later in the season.

If we get Soldo right, our rucks will be set for the next five years. Regardless of what happens with Griffiths both Elton and Soldo need to play at least another 5-10 games each in the seniors this year.

getting to where the ball is, is a good sign from a big IMO.

Hes got a motor and was on camera twice as much as any other game.

Im not suggesting hes the new Kouta, merely that he's getting rapidly better at filling in for an important role.

I think he'll almost certainly stay in for next week.

agree

so far (our crows structure aside), were managing a very bad situation pretty well.

Yes, he,ll stay in for another week by default. But I'll tell ya now, he aint gunna make it. Will be delisted at years end.

I don't think anyone thinks that is a whacky proposition Tim. I will be shocked if he becomes a solid KPP/ relief ruck. Its about filling needs with what we have available right now.

If he does, who for?

He's come along massively since we put him on the list a couple of years ago. Worked his butt off. He certainly needs to be kept on the list for another season or two and then see what progress has been made. If its not enough then delist or trade him. We do need a young natural ruckman to be drafted by us while we see where Soldo goes with his footy...

Talking about rocketman I think, which is confusing 'cos its the soldo thread.

I was at the end pretty much right behind and i suspect it was going to wobble through. But in fairness to Elton, Lambert produces some unique spin on the ball when he kicks so he may also have thought it was going out on the full.

Thought it might/may have hit the post?

Elton had to go for the mark but spilled as we know. Had a spin the kick?

its academic Arlo. He had no choice really but to go for the grab, and while Id tipped in too much hard liquor by that stage, I dont think it was like he spilled a soda. :don't know

my point being, hes not far off kicking 2 and being a sort of low expectation fill-in hero for a week or so.

But yeah, its the Soldo thread.

Its quite possible, if we take part in September, that one of these blokes play an important bit part.
