I thought Hampson actually had quite a good game for his 11 disposals, 6 contested, 2 clearances, 2 1%ers, 2 tackles and 34 hitouts. But whilst beaten, 22yo Nankervis playing all day against a taller opponent had 14 disposals, 10 contested, 5 clearances, 7 1%ers , 7 tackles and 38 hitouts. Hampson had a really good day marking wise with 4 contested marks, but let's be honest that's not a norm for Hampson, 5 games around that he averaged less than 1 per game. Jacobs played a blinder against Nankervis, he can do that, but it didn't help to have ZERO ruckman support particularly for someone so young and relatively inexperienced.
Harsh to knock Hampson now that he's injured but I am personally glad Nankervis's opportunity opened up as he, to me, is clearly a better option than Hampson for now and for our long-term future. I fear he wouldn't have been given this opportunity to gain such valuable experience if Hampson was fit and fighting.
As already stated, many valid points. Not sure if Vickery was much help in the ruck that game, since Hammer had to play 100% TOG? Not sure Grigg would have been much worse for Nank in '17 game. Jacobs gained more Ds too in '16, but, amusingly, had more clangers than Hampson I think. I think H's marking was always erratic due to a vision problem which has never been fully overcome. Yes, have been saying for quite a while that Nank will lack support, with Griffiths out especially. But Jacobs as the older, highly experienced ruck schooled him in a way he certainly couldn't do to Hampson.
They are different types. Overall, Nank is definitely a more complete footballer but I believe Hampson may have been very useful in some games this year, supporting Nankervis or opposing Boyd last week who took over after Q1 as Soldo tired. He would have knocked Boyd around.
Anyway, we may never see N & H play in tandem now. Nank still young and can only improve, but will always give away those few centimetres to the real giant rucks. But as long as Soldo and Elton can consolidate their progress from that match I'll be happy.
