We actually did well in the clearances. Were just killed on the spread.

Fantastic effort.
SCOOP said:And that’s what you want from your ruck. Effort and physical contests. Just break even in the middle.
Big tick.
tigersnake said:Big Ivan had a good game, I agree with the theory and practise of recruiting him, but in a top side he'd be a second/ third ruck, a good depth ruck. And maybe thats what he'll end up being to TV or a future draft/ recruit. He's doing exactly what we expected and wanted, and he came cheap. Competing and going hard, taking a few grabs. big tick.
BUT the contrast with Kreuzer was stark. In general play Maric is like watching cattle dogs running around a Brahman bull. I beleive sides now need a gun ruck, a super ruck who are very good at traditional ruck duties, but can also 'play short' around the ground. Kreuzer, Cox, Otto and Jolly all fit this bill. Hawthorn are the only recent flag winning side who didn't. We aren't there yet, and Maric is good for now, but recruiters need to have an eye on getting another agile ruck for the future.
As an aside, Brisbane are a ruckman factory.
tigersnake said:Kreuzer did more than just slip fwd and get a goal or two, he was one of their better midfielders, or an extra RR. Tremendous player. To me it again throws up an interesting question, age old question. Obviously everyone wants a gun ruck in the Kreuzer/ Cox mold, but not everyone has got one or can have one. So do you then go for someone good around the ground but not a monster who is not great in the ruck? Or vice versa? Its an old debate, going back to when Jeans said rucks weren't essential and won a flag with an undersized, second string ruck, (was it Abbott?). Coincidently years later Hawthorn did it again recently with Renouf, who isn't that good at anything, just OK on a good day. Brisbane the polar opposite, veiwing big buffetting rucks, usually 2, as essential to finals success.
Not something we have to worry much about this year, which as I said, getting Ivan looks like a good move.
