Except that what God giveth with one hand he taketh with another. Every week we gain a player off the injury list we lose another to injury.

Worth noting that Essendon are currently reviewing their conditioning depart due to a spate of stress injuries to three young players.

Would be interesting to see a breakdown of games lost to injuries before and after the soft cap was introduced.

I’m sure it’s had an affect. Simpson was complaining about it being detrimental to their program a couple of years ago. Look at their injury list now.

Early prognosis

After a gradual shortening of the injury list, it's jumped out again at Punt Road. Hopper has suffered a strain to the soleus portion of his calf, which is in the lower portion of the leg. Soldo was a test last week, but has been bumped back out to a medium-term return as he battles a plantar fasciitis issue. Gibcus was poised to make a VFL return over the weekend, but suffered a setback to a different spot in his hamstring on Friday. – Sarah Black

Early prognosis

The injuries are piling up again at Essendon. The Bombers will be hoping to regain Ridley after he missed the trip to Brisbane, but Kelly will be sidelined for at least another week. Parish will miss weeks with his calf injury, while Guelfi, Cox and Tsatas are all inching closer to fitness. – Dejan Kalinic

Yep, the soft cap is still a third less than it was pre-covid. But AFL exec salaries are up 13%. Nearly $12 million per year on AFL execs. What do any of them do? (The Minister for Screwing Richmond must be on a couple of mil.)

Good point, but there is one thing everyone seems to have failed to factor in… 23 home and away games. 1 extra from last year (and 5 games too many IMO).

I would assume every fitness and conditioning team around the league had to make adjustments in the preseason after Gather Round was added to the fixture and the season started a week earlier. And the unbelievably high injury rate across the league this year would suggest most teams got it wrong.

I have been pushing the 18 + 18 rule for many years now (18 games + 18 minute quarters).

One of my main arguments for this is that it should (in theory) help with conditioning and wear and tear on players. If we had an 18 games season, Dusty might be able to play til he’s 40.

Problem with 18 games a season Binny is Dusty would need to play until he is 40 to see him play the same amount of games as retiring at 35.

I get the reasoning but I don't want 20% reduction in games as season with less gametime to boot.

Fewer games = less money. The Australian Money League loves money. No money they money their money monetarily. Money.

I dispute this. the game will be a far superior product with a shorter season.

Anyway, its a moot point. It'll never happen

Absolutely it'd be better. But the AML doesn't care about the quality of anything but the green.
