Goodbye Mabior Chol

The Ghost was based on his skin colour, now imagine saying something equivalent to a dark skinned player these days. You'd be hung, drawn & quartered by the media.

The Ghosts nickname (or should that be Nicolename) was started by Tom Hafey because Jim, when he first started at the Tigers was very shy & quiet. Hafey said he used to " just appear" at training & "disappear" after training just like a Ghost. Nothing at all to do with his skin colour. Jess himself told the story in his interview with Mike Sheahan earlier this year.

Is that the 21 century watered down version? In any case, I have a mate with a similar complexion & we call him Casper (or Cas for short). Never bothered him in the slightest. I also have another mate we call the Black Mamba, he's Bangladeshi & he's totally fine with it. Point is the media would be all over the latter for causing offense where no offense was intended. I grew up with Golliwogs, they're now seen as racist icons which is totally absurd.

With the greatest respect, unless you look like your avatar, you are unqualified to comment on what is acceptable or otherwise. Just as I cannot comment on whether it’s ok for me to call a female colleague a ‘girl’.

Can't say 'chicks' anymore, despite the term featuring in the classic song Fever by Peggy Lee. Can't even say 'my wife' in certain quarters because that equates to ownership/slavery. Can't say mankind because that's just plain sexist. Things have gone a bit too far in my opinion, people need to accept that physical difference can lead to labeling which doesn't necessarily equate to offense. I have a hairy chest & sometimes my students call me monkey, doesn't bother me in the slightest & I use it for comic relief. Before the black face taboo I went to a cricket club party & one bloke covered his entire face with boot polish, suffice to say it was the source of endless chuckles (for the next week if you get my drift). Interestingly red heads still cop it from all angles but you don't get media uproar, ginger hair & thick skin, I salute the blueys of this world.

Good old light hearted racism.

The fact that you associate African people with home invasions is not 'a light hearted comment that touches on race'. It's a racist comment that breeds xenophobia and hate. But you have form there.

But you were nice to an indian person. So you can make whatever comment you feel like about black people without fear of racism. Right.

Well batted 'burg.

L2 does indeed have a long rap sheet..

Outstanding footy statistician and commentater and a PRE treasure? Yes

Liberal thinker? No

Well may folks say stick to footy, forget politics

And i respect that

But my perspective is; racism pervades, and it follows that counter racism must too

If I would say Alir Alir would have a *smile* bigger than Horse Longmire, I am being racist, whilst paying Alir ALir a strange sort of compliment.

I wasn't aware he was a chicken farmer.

I once introduced guest speaker to an audience as a "Spokeswoman" (she was a female of the human kind) & she was quite aggrieved that I hadn't introduced her as a "Spokesperson".

It seems that sometimes you just can't win.

From then on if I was introducing a person of the opposite sex. I asked which term they'd prefer me to use, "Spokesperson or Spokeswoman, Chairperson or Chairwoman" & guess which they preferred.
Not the one ending with "person".

It's a shame that people overlook, and choose to gloss over, the actual instances of bigotry by choosing to reduce the whole situation to absurd situations of word play and political correctness.

What I always find bemusing is that it's usually the same people who whine about not being able to call black people home invaders, or Muslims terrorists, that get inordinately defensive when men are asked to think about domestic violence.

'' Just because some pricks who were born like me did something bad, doesn't mean I'm like that! How dare you even insinuate it?''

Indeed. And its is usually the people who so desperately want to defend the rights of the transgendered, Muslims, Africans, asylum seekers et al from attac k s and hate speech who then turn around and attack hate speech:
White people
Men
Conservative politicians
Christians

Maybe it might be off topic but is Mabs going to make it? Certainly hope so as showed something prior to his season ender injury. Assume he stays as the club tends to be loyal to those who have suffered season enders?

He definately showed something and heard Easy Tiger was there with a tape measure.
His injury was originally misdiagnosed and has been update to a hyperextention of his third leg caused by chasing chickens around his farm.

What people object to is misreporting. Fake news.

“There are no African gangs.”
“There is no evidence that the attack was terrorism-related.”
“Domestic violence is an epidemic and the man standing next to you could be guilty of it.”
“We must switch to renewables immediately or the earth will turn into Venus.”
“Women are underpaid in comparison to men.”
etc.
