Goodbye Mabior Chol

Watched him in Wangaratta in the preseason and for the first time he looked like he had really stepped up.

Some passages of play were in fact sublime, like he was born to play the game.
Yes did hear that he looked much improved in the 2018 preseason and took this into the VFL season proper. But observers seem to suggest he does still go missing for long periods in some matches. Still needs to switch on for longer. Really hoping this bloke makes it. No doubting he has the god given tools. Can he harness these tools consistently is the question?

Totally agree. I think he's got plenty of tools to play the game. Just found it interesting that his name wasn't also announced.

Mabs is 21, 200cms tall & in football terms he's still a "baby" imo there's a lot of improvement in him. I'd think he would've played a few AFL games this year if he hadn't been injured. That would've given us supporters a better insight into how he was tracking.
He's an exciting prospect, but as has been said before he does tend to drift in and out of games, sometimes players get out of that habit & sometimes they don't. I'm hoping Mabs is one of the former.

200 cms tall, has a good leap, is quick, let's give him a bit more time to develope.

Maybe there's more to his deal considering that he can't stay on the rookie list for another year.

Really great points. The problem that he will face next year is that if Balta steps up, and I reckon he will, Chol and Soldo for that matter get bumped down the list.

Lynch can pinch hit in the ruck and if Balta gets games there wont be space for him.

People forget that he was a rookie in Brisbane and came to Tigerland with Leppa. All up that means on rookie lists for five years or so...you can only have so much patience.

I think Balta will continue to be groomed down back, while Soldo is a pure ruck.

I'm not hugely optimistic re Chol, but there's definitely a lot to work with from a physical standpoint. Big season coming coming up for him.

He was not on Brisbane's rookie list, he was part of their academy. We got him as an 18-year-old.

I doubt Balta will ruck in the ones next year.

Good point about the academy, I wasn't aware of that. Regardless of that I think he's been on our rookie list for three years which I believe means he gets elevated or delisted.

Given his form prior to injury and that he is athletically right to be the swing man that we are missing then I would give him another year

Had a beer with someone close to his host family and before the injury he was ahead of Cal Moore in the pecking order.

The coaching staff were very happy with his output and the direction he was heading. I've no doubt he'll get another year.

And will go head to head with Moore for that list spot in 2020. I'm still in on him, heading the right way.

Scooper, I wasn't on him but I started seeing something mid year. More contests more intent. More intriguing prospect now.

Sure he is big and strong with a good leap but from reports I have read CCJ is coming along very well as a ruck / resting forward despite having his season carefully managed and he doesn't go missing when he plays so he may well go pass Choi in 2019.

Yeah I was similar Lamby. The regular watchers who saw him thought the same. My limited viewings of him showed me an athlete who is trying to figure out how to play big boy key position football the Richmond way. Halve the contests in the air, present up but still be mobile enough to push back into space. But the skills are sublime.

As a ruckman possibly but Chol offers something different, athleticism pace and lateral movement.

CCJ your traditional ruckman with some smarts and technique who can take a grab and kick a goal.

CCJ is a whiles away I think while Cholly would hope to start demanding games this year

Please elaborate Tooeys, just cos.

Mabior has always had great skills. His biggest issue has been his tank & mindset to date. Not unusual for a young tall.
Previously he'd show glimpses but drop off the contest. However this year, before his injury he'd taken great strides forward particularly in his competitiveness, for longer in games. 2nd & third efforts in contested situations that weren't there previously. His intent had improved greatly & it was as if he'd started to believe he was much better than those he was playing against. I homestly think if he keeps working on his fitness & physiche that it really could click into place & he could be a real weapon for us. Has far more upside than majak Daw who took many seasons to come good & had a big impact for Norf this year. Marbs is a project that we must persist with because the rewards could be great.

I saw the JLT game and the VFL praccie game before Carlton round 1 and I picked this up too. Something had clicked for him. Shame he got injured. Hopefully he can rediscover that and should get one more year

With Mabior it looked like he was a big kid playing with little kids and he didn't want to play too rough.

Also he just got lost in the play. He would amble about not realising he had a real play at the ball and then when he realised make a belated effort. His intent and game awareness seemed to improve a fair bit this year.

As I've alluded to previously you put Cotchin's brain and desire inside Chol's body and you've got the next ten brownlows in the bag.
