Goodbye Mabior Chol

He's that athletically gifted, he can kick 3 goals in 3 minutes if he can be bothered. Other that that he is either dropping sodas, or spectating from the stands. Some of his positioning in packs is the worse I've ever seen. When he's caught in congestion, he neither competes or positions for crumbs. Only area he excels in is running and leaping at the air ball where he is truly majestic. Frustrating. Won't make it as you can't teach body positioning. Can we give him a brain transplant?
I disagree with you BT on the teaching, I think a lot of our backline have all shown great improvement in how to position and use there body’s in marking contests, most of it learnt by good coaching and experience by playing. Just on MC I’d imagine coming from football in Queensland his a bit behind the 8 ball in the education stakes when it comes to the nuances of footy, imho his weakness in marking contests has been the lack of wanting body contact, in saying that I definitely see improvement, ad the right mindset in the contest and his athletic ability and he could be a player, however as you point out he has his woeful moments too. Time will tell

If he could put it all together we’d have a player, could also be career over in 18 months , definable improved and stays in games longer from what I’ve seen.

Definitely improving & that is what you want. 200cms & still only 21 yrs old..

Big wraps about him on the RFC web site today.

Remember he is only 21 so very young for a ruckman.

Looking good for the future or even a back up for Nanks already.

People forget Daw has been on norths list for 9 years. 9 years
Chol has improved in 2 years greatly, 2 more preseasons he will be a jet.

Athletic talls with outstanding kicking skills don't grow on trees. This is Chol's third year in a lengthy apprenticeship, patience is a must. Was drafted as a waif like project who was barely the minimum height for a ruck. He's now 200cm & 92kg, his contested marking has improved & he's winning clearances. I'd even go so far as to suggest he's tracking ahead of schedule.

And he can kick goals from outside 50

And struggled to get games at one of the worst clubs in the league. Using Daw probably not a great example for a positive future.

I 100% Agree with this.

You dont draft a 198cm african kid that weighs 82 kgs and expect him to be a regular before 5 years in your system, In 2 years time Chol will be alot stronger and more explosive as well as a more understanding of the game as well as our game plan.

Max Gawn was drafted in 2009
2012 he turned 21 and hadnt played a senior afl game
2014 at the Age of 24 he only played 9 games and his statts average was
10 disposals, 4 marks , 15 hitouts , 1 tackle , 0.4 goals a game

We need to wait and be patient but i do see some really good signs in Chol (also some laziness and doubt)
Im happy to Hold

Not quite right regarding Max Gawn. Remember he's 208cm. But he did an ACL in 2009 and missed all of 2010 because of it. Had a ripper 2011 in the VFL and was selected for his first game in Round 11 of 2011. Had over 30 hitouts in his 2nd AFL game. Then in 2012 he did a knee again and missed the whole season. Then in 2013 he did a hammie pre-season. Late in 2014 he had minor knee surgery again. Not really a good comparison for Chol. I have doubts about Chol, 198cm not quite tall enough imo, you have to be insanely competitive and excel in other areas to account for the lack in height for a ruck. Hope he makes it but just doesn't seem to have the nous and immense desire required to me.

He's 200cm now, perfectly acceptable for his style of ruck. I'd be focusing on turning him into a Ryder/Stef Martin type, just needs another 8kg and some more work on the aerobic fitness. As for the football IQ, cannot forget that he's new to football, most juniors have spent 10 years playing the game, Chol spent a brief amount of time with the Brisbane Academy but was overlooked in favour of Reuben William who is already on the football scrap heap. Now that he's in a professional environment the sky's the limit. I will also add that the desire is there but like any tall, he's at a stage where it's glimpses of talent not necessarily complete domination. Worth looking at this week's coaches wrap, some important KPIs already being reached.

Majak Daw

born 11 March 1991
moved to Australia in 2003
took up Australian rules under-14s (all I could find. Anyone else know his age?)
contracted to North Melbourne in the 2009
AFL debut 2013,

Mabior Chol
born 29 January 1997
moved to Australia in 2005
took up Australian rules@ 12
Drafted by the mighties 2016

Ive seen MajaK play a few times. He is an amazing athlete and he has some special tools. Its always looked like that if it all came together he could be one of the best players in the comp.

Mabior, has spent a bigger portion of his life here, most likely he exposed to the game from an earlier age. Maybe started footy a year or two earlier.

With the size, strength and athletic ability that many African's have, it seems only a matter of time before those natural traits produce a great of the game. In moments of watching Majak he seemed capable and not far of it all clicking into place. If it all comes together for Mabior he will be a huge asset. The potential is worth it.

Haven't seen much of Aliir Aliir. But he seems to be tracking well.

As we always say, big blokes need time. A big bloke with this much talent gets way more time.

I got a good feeling about this fella!

Yes this is another reason it will be very difficult for him to make it. Yes it's happened once or twice elsewhere but the odds against increases. Footy IQ is something that the likes of Ryder and Gawn have always had. They key for a ruckman is getting into the right spots. Pretty tough thing to learn later on in life. I'm not against giving him time by the way, he is definitely athletically gifted and gee if he can make it at AFL level, he will be very exciting.

Rucks generally don't click until their mid 20s, plenty of time for Chol. Technically his skills are top shelf, one of his standout features is his kicking, you'd be hard pressed to find too many 200cm players with such a fluid action. Part of the reason he's been unable to compete at VFL level is his frame, this will only improve & with another 8kg he'll be ready to mix it with the best.

Out of interest, do you think we should be giving him AFL time to get a taste? Had that 1 game in 2016 which was clearly way too premature.

Definitely worth the odd game or two, I'd expect some cameos in the same way we used Soldo.

Unfortunately I reckon neither will make it. Majak has had plenty of chances. Not game sense, difficult to teach. I hope marboi does make it, be great for the African community.

Thought he was ordinary yesterday, terrible below the knees, missing targets with his kicking.
