Goodbye Mabior Chol

Throw him in. Keep it simple: run, jump, play.

youde think a cameo tall would be better than a cameo small?

$hai Jack Stengle

Geezer Chol Drioli.

a terrifyingly inexperienced forward line that would thrill and enrage until 2019

So infuriating that there's a second tall spot with a large neon sign flashing 'VACANT' in the seniors, and Mabs can't seem to consistently push a case for selection.

It's really frustrating, but also one of the hardest positions to succeed at. I think the KPF may be almost disappearing gradually from the game. They get such limited opportunities, the ball often doesn't get down to them much, must hold a high mark that is invariably heavily contested usually against more than one well-trained tall opponent. If they don't clutch it, which is the far more common event, and not be skilful and competitive enough at ground level, plus have a load of smarts, the ball is just run back past them again.

Look at Lynch in last night's game against the Bloos - 6Ks 4Hs 1M 1B - towelled up by Liam Jones, re-invented defender from failed KPF. And he's supposed to be about the best in comp. Just ask Zips.

Was thinking the same thing at the game yesterday.

Being 5-10cms taller than a smart, medium forward/midfielder looks great on paper, but in heavily congested forward lines they rarely take big contested pack marks and kick goals. They just don't. You can use a medium to put body work on so the ball spills to your smalls, or you need to kick it to a leading medium player. That completely makes the non-marking tall forward's role redundant.

Instead of upgrading Lloyd for Reid at a salary cap cost of 500k extra, I'd rather upgrade Lambert for a midfielder worth 500k more than him and I'd be pretty sure we'd be a better chance of winning matches.

Lower the eyes and put it to advantage. It works better than bombing to 3 on 1s because someone is 10cms taller than a midfielder.

Dimma said last night at the mid season review that Marbs had put on 11 kgs over the preseason

He was talking about me and it was over the first 11 games.

Been biggerwill not make any difference if you still can not get the ball.
No, but with a relative skinny, (when drafted), 198cm Rookie you do want them to put on some size to have a body capable of mixing it. Pity he hasn't combined that with improving his tank which is no better than last year, maybe the extra kg's has hampered that.
What i haven't seen is any urgency in his game, the number of times the ball is delivered high into the forward line and he chooses not to compete or goes one hand is worrying.
Seems too cool for school for someone that hasn't made it yet.
The boys on Talking Tigers said they call him 2 phone Cholly, apparently walks around with 2 phones and 2 different ring tones. A different cat that's for sure.
None the less, has talent, but no guarantee of making it.

Re: Welcome to Tigerland - Mabior Cho

In the cutthroat world of AFL how many seasons do you give a 2nd round rookie draftee?

2017 match reviews for Chol:
4 VFL Used in the ruck as a back to Soldo and in attack. Did some handy things. -
5 VFL Made the most of his chances in attack with three all-important goals. -
6 VFL Quiet week and was unable to impact the contest. -
7 VFL Forced to ruck against Footscray's monsters and battled hard. -
8 VFL Struggled to have any impact on the contest. Just five touches. -
9 VFL Did a few things but it wasn’t a big outing. -
10 VFL Kicked a couple of goals and marked well at times. Better. -
11 VFL Unable to get much going in attack. Just five touches and outpointed a few times.

yep have to admit it doesn't look like AL level transforming form. Let's face it the tall cupboard is bare.

Nowhere near ready for AFL
I suppose the question re our 2nd tall options is would any of them make us a better team now ? Even though none of them are ready for top level footy.

Fly McRae on Chol in this weeks VFL report ...

"The ability to play at both ends is going to be integral for his future."

hmmm...

Interesting, Backbone.

I'm hearing 'Not good enough to play forward.' And 'Future not assured.' Which is what I'm seeing ATM so maybe I'm biased.

Watching him live against the Northern Bloopers lead me to think he is one of three things -

Unathletic

Unfit

Uninterested
Problem is all are unacceptable for a prospective AFL footballer.

If we delisted him (and we should), I seriously doubt anyone would consider picking him up, even at VFL level.

Has size, has talent, has athleticism in spades. But no intensity, or feel for the game. It's embarrassing how lost he looks on the field for 95% of his game time.

Isn't fit to tie McBean's bootlaces.
